Ok, so I am thinking about painting my 89 Trans Am when i get back to the states...or having my wife get it done before she leaves...undecided on that right now. But either way:

I have thought about getting it painted SILVER/CHROME. I think it would look awesome done with a mirror-like finish over the entire car. I dont know how in the world to do it, but I have visualized it in my head for a long long time.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?? Has something like this been done?? If so, then by who?? How much would it cost??

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Patrick

I like the idea And would like to see it done, but hate the thought about the time you' ll have to spend to keep it clean and shiny, not even thinking about the attraction your car will have on the cops.

With 400 hp Under the hood I would keep the exterior of the car As stock as possible. Maybe only a set of big shiny TT-2 rims.
Just let the engine do the talking.

Just my 2 cents

Just think what it would look like going down the strip though??

I have always thought that Trans Ams particularly have been about being bold and brazen and "In-Your-Face". Bearing that in mind I think about the old Birds of the 70s with the Huge birds on the hoods and I think this would be just as much in your face.

Just not sure how to go about it.

I agree to DutchTBI88 on that one.
That is what my idea is... look slow and be fast!

I know the look slow and go fast thing. Part of me has enjoyed that with the gunmetal gray Trans Am. It just slides by and isnt arrest me red or anything. It has had a uniqueness about it because of that color. I just have envisioned this other color and want to decide which way to go with it.

Do what you like, just don't forget to post a picture after ya done! Oh and as far as being low and slow, it's an F-body, not a chevette, so that theory is out tha window.

Of course I would post pics, but most 3rd gens seem to have a reputation as being less than their more modern counterparts...so I figure that if even if I have a paint job that looks like that people wont expect it to run like it will.

I will have some pics of it when either my wife sends me some or I get to take some myself next time I go back to the states. It is currently the Gunmetal Gray.

Of course, they could call the color Jail me Chrome or something??

Why don't you ask somebody to photoshop a picture of your car in chrome first, so you can have an idea of how it would look like.

I would do it for you, but I am not that good with photoshop (yet)

I think it would look pretty gay, personally. Everything, including the sun would reflect off of it, and you wouldn't even be able to see it. Just my thoughts. :)

This is why I put this up here...to get peoples thoughts and if someone has any other suggestions. I guess a part of me really loves the color that it is now, but also want something a little different. So I am being indecisive at the same time.

Still open to any other suggestions anyone may have....

Thanks,

Patrick

Actually the color that I have envisioned is a mirror type finish. Not just silver, but kinda like CHROME all over the car. I just felt that would be something radically different than anything else anyone has ever done. I love the idea of being very different like that.

Apart from personally not really liking the idea, I have some doubts about the safety for other drivers ... while it might be something different, I wouldn't want to have a mirror the size of a car driving around, blinding everybody in sight due to sun reflection ... or at night, having you in front of somebody, the headlights might be reflected ... not good ... if you decide to get it done, you better check with your local laws to see if such a large mirrored area is permitted ...

T think it would only be lookalike chrome because chrome can't be spray painted. If you want something really chromed it has to be put in a chromebath. That kind of chroming is very expensive and you would have to take the whole body off of the chassis.

I've never seen a chrome bath the size of a car either come to think of it.

These sorts of ideas and knowledge are exactly why I posted this questions. I had not considered the safety of other drivers with something like this reflecting headlights or other things. Good point there!!

I didnt know how chrome was done in the first place. So, I also learned about the bath that Rene said. So, this is turning out to be fairly impractical from that perspective. Which helps me in ruling out that idea.

Thank you all for your ideas and help. Any more???

Patrick

I am open to any other suggestions anyone else may have for color or appearance. Please feel free to give me suggestions. A part of me likes the idea of keeping it exactly the way it looks now, just with a fresh coat of paint and lots of clearcoat and wax. But a part of me wants something really cool and unique.

Any ideas??

Patrick

Well i know that viper silver is the brightest silver u can get on yur car without having it look like a giant mirrorball, thumbs down for the chrome, its a firebird not a time machine. But if u do plan on going chrome i could get u a sweet deal on a used flux capacitor.

If you want a finish similar to the one you descride..... find a nice light silver (like that of the 03 Nissan Maxima, I believe it's called satin silver??) and have your body shop add about 3 tsp of silver flake to it (most people only have 12 tsp added and get quite the shiny finish)... I have seen it done before and it looked pretty nice... but the guy started off with a bright Cherry Red color. Just some advice.
