I am trying to visit Scotland next year, to visit the town of Peebles, in the southern uplands between Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Lockerbie. My mother's family (Peebles) founded the town and my bloodline through her goes back almost a thousand years. My closest relatives that I am aware of in that area are in Manchester, England. I have never been there and I need advice on how I should do this and how I could find out more about my family

Sven, check out this site... http://www.ryanair.com They fly right to Glasgow, I think. The wife and I took a flight with them to Ireland. You need to have a passport though, that ID card and a leave form don't cut it anymore. You can usually fly for less than a rack of beer. Hope this helps.

Rob

I live in Newcastle, which aint too far from Peebles, 2hrs max. I'll try and contact the local heritage centre to get some inof for you.

My first guess there will be some local historian that will be able to give some info.

I am right in understanding your mothers family names is Peeble??

Try this link to the Scottish Border Heritage.

http://www.scottishbordersheritage.co.uk/

The search function shows info on Peebles

They have a contacts detials page, I think an email to them explaining your request on your family hsitory should help.

If I find more info I'll let you know

Not a problem. The wife and I flew to Ireland for like $75 for both of us, and round trip. That is mostly airport fees also. The only thing better would be taking a Space-A flight.

Trouble is, Peebles is quite remote from a UK airport.

Are you planning on hiring some wheels, a small car will be about 200 Euros for the week??

When are you coming over, we could meet up??

Hey, that is great........take notes for me...... I will have to let my mother know, she is interested also.

I am afraid I am not able send you the whisky...

but sometime next year I plan to go up there, I might need your help once I get there......

I will give you plenty of advance notice.

I can get you a bottle of whisky (or three) then....

thank you again, and I am usually only a keyboard away..... unless I have to go somewhere else temporarily...

I possibly might also encorporate seeing the closest relatives to that area that I know about, in Manchester (not so close)... I have relatives all over the British Isles that I still yet have to see for the first time.... Same goes for Denmark and a slight possibilty of Norway....my mom has scandinavian roots, but going back well over 800 years the previously little known scottish roots become more apparrent.

My mother originally told me about her family founding the town, but she said it was in Danmark but she was not absolutely sure, it was something passed on through word of mouth over the generations. Well, I have been doing some research, and apparently Scottland is the correct place.

I will be in touch. Keep me posted PLEASE......let me know how it goes.
