Yes, well that's quite enough of that. Swas Stika...er, no, a very poor taste joke, I concede, but we've run out of French stuff. Actually, let me make it clear that we're all joking and this is all completely historical and I hope no-one gets offended as none intended.

Well, today I was in Mannheim, but one of my fellow squad leaders looks up the regulation, to see what it says about faults.. THE WORSE POSSIBLE SCENARIO IS THIS: THEY GIVE YOU FIVE DAYS TO CORRECT ANY DEFICIENCIES, AND THEN AND ONLY THEN CAN THEY MAKE YOU REGISTER THE CAR NON-OP. I AM SO PISSED OFF NOW. I can't wait to get back from Bremerhaven next week.....

Seems like it's the same story everywhere. Years ago, when I took my Z first time to the inspection, they said that my US-spec car is registered by mistake and they will now destroy my registration paper, take the plates and I'm welcome back after 25 years (older than that E certification is not needed). You can imagine what I was thinking, I had just bought it from private seller !!! Phonecall to local tüv, some yelling and it came out that they were wrong - my car was perfectly legal, because it was imported before the enforcement of E-certification for imported cars.
Our local laws are as strict as in Germany in theory, but fortunately it is still possible to "find a way", so after first experience with "honest" inspection, I have used the "way" and no problems since, although I did remove all emission equipment and car is loud like hell.

Well I used to be in baumholder quite a few years back- as a matter of fact, I was the traffic cop and in charge of traffic investigations at the Baumholder Provost Marshal's Office-
They and other inspectors around USAREUR are like that because of a liability issue and politics.
Many times I have had to go to car accidents some really bad and the driver(s) would say that
" The INSPECTOR passed my car, he said my brakes were fine"
" The car just passed inspection" (18 year old male who does have any driving experience, period)
" I don't know what happened, the INSPECTOR said that the car was okay"
" There was a slight problem, but the INSPECTOR let me go."
HOW WOULD you like it IF YOU HELPED SOME ONE OUT ... AND THEY TURNED AROUND AND BLAMED YOU.....
FOR NOT BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN VEHICLE? for injuries their children may get?
AND HOW THEY DROVE AND NOT CARED FOR THE VEHICLE?
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU WERE NOT A JERK AND THEN THEY TURNED AROUND AND TRIED TO SUE YOU?
If I was an inspector I would fail everyone for the slightest thing too.....
SCREW EM!!!!!!!
..... I have been here in Germany for over 7 years now and if they tell you to fix or change something..... JUST DO WHAT EVER THEY SAY. If you have to have a German Inspection DO IT..
I have been failed more than once for something.. the answer is simple...
SHUT UP AND GET IT CORRECTED OR JUST GET ANOTHER VEHICLE.
if you have a problem with that then maybe you should not have that vehicle in the first place.....
The technical aspects of a vehicle should never be underrated or underestimated.... JUST FIX IT.

I have my LS-1 Trans Am and my Suzuki Hayabusa strictly dealer maintained because it makes a difference, and also why I don't have any issues. Even if a dealer is not available in your area, you are still responsible for your vehicle, and what it does, not the inspector.
I myself do subject the LS-1 to speeds well over 100 MPH and the Hayabusa at speeds just over 200 MPH.......
I use my vehicles just about every month of the year and I have no issues..... whatsoever...... because my life and the life of the others on the road depend on it.

My issue was that there was NOTHING wrong with the "like new" tires. I fixed the other minor problems that he found, but he was not correct in saying that I needed new tires. (See regulations) He didn't like the fact that I knew what I was talking about and he didn't. (I got paperwork from the TUeV as well backing me up) I had new tires on order, but that wasn't the point. It was the principle. Besides, this inspector has always given me problems. (Don't ask why I keep going to that inspection station, even I wonder why unless it's for the laughs that I get.) With my '57, there is always something stupid. The last time was that he said that my mufflers were not "factory installed". When has that been an issue? Nothing on the truck is "factory installed". One year he didn't like where my horn button was. It's on the side of the column. He said that it had to be in the middle of the steering wheel. (hard to do on something that didn't come with a horn.) I had to remind him that there are cars that come from the factory with the horn "button" elsewhere such as the end of the blinker lever (late '70s Ford LTD and some Mercedes trucks) Another time it was that I needed a new engine due to my oil pan leaking. Yes, he said that I had to replace my engine. Once he said that he didn't like my brakes. Before he drove the truck in the bay, I told him that the brakes work well so he didn't have to hit them hard. He didn't believe me when I told him that I upgraded to brakes to disks in the front and added a master cylinder and booster from a '83 Camaro. A Wilwood proportioning valve was added to get everything working in harmony. Does he listen to me? Of course not. After nearly smacking his head in my windshield he made this comment. BTW, my side to side readings are within 1% of each other and they got better readings than a new car that he just did prior to my truck. There are many other things that he says that just doesn't make sense. It's a crying shame that soldiers who don't know any better believe him and spend money on stuff that they don't need. If a senior inspector can't tell if a car is front wheel drive or not after inspecting it, he should NOT be working there. At that point he lost that tiny fraction of credibility that he had left. Since they have been working there for so long, they can't get fired without their supervisors looking bad. (why did they wait so long to do something about the incompetent individuals working there?)
BTW, all of these "so called faults" have not been "corrected". If it ain't broke, I ain't gonna fix it.

Sven, I'm glad that you have your own viewpoints, and I know you are totally free to express them, but the fact of the matter is:
IF YOU ARE GOING TO ENFORCE CERTAIN RULES AND REGULATIONS, KNOW THEM FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My point was that he told me to take the plates off on the spot, WITHOUT giving me the mandatory 5 day grace period, PERIOD.

WoW !
I did not know that there is bigger letters than Sven's...
and in bright RED !
Sven, I think you made Jack a little mad now.
Jack is working hard to get at least the beetle on the road since
he got this bad luck with the 'maro. Where ever I go lately I run
into Jack working on his car(s).
And the beetle does not look bad at all, better than many I have
seen on the road before.

ha ha ha. he is not the first one I have pissed of here, right squirrelina?
like I said before, ok, OK OK OK, OK.......let me spell it out....
O....K...A....Y......
I am not going to argue because this is really of little value to me, but, that 5 day grace period applies to temporary plates only.
I can tell you this. Say whatever, but I have taken away people license plates away for much lesser things.
If that MP or inspecting official had obvious reason to believe the vehicle was unsafe, and if that official did not do anything, then .........
regardless of what the regulation states......... but whatever, dude,
Whatever, okay?
I am I being a moron? yes do I piss people off? I have on occaission. I apologize OKAY?
Whatever you say....

Sven, your little 'theory' is highly flawed! Wanna know why?
Because I am reading right here on page C-1, paragraph C-3/a/3 where it says, and I quote, Quote: If the deficiencies constitute an immediate safety hazard, the AE Label 190-1A will be dated 5 workdays from the inspection date and operation of the vehicle will be authorized only from the inspection station to a designated place or garage
He went about it all wrong, Sven, and if you can't see that, then I'm sorry but that's not a problem I need to deal with.
