I am PCSing to Spang on the 15th of Dec. The Z/28 already said it isn't driving on any salty roads. So what can I expect to spend on a reliable used car? Which ones are to be avoided? I know anything made in France sucks. I heard through the grapevine that a German can't sell a totaled (insurance wise) car to another German, but they can fix it and sell it to an American. True or b.s.:-dunno: Any info will be appreciated. Oh, one more thing....GO BLACKHAWKS:D;)

Hey man, buy yourself a used Golf or BMW. Everyone has them, but that is because they are dependable. You could spend between $1000-$3000 on a decent used car. :) Good luck, and we look forward to meeting you and the Z....

$1000?

I spent $400 on my hooptie beast and it was a champ for a year. Took it to Manheim 2 or 3 times also. Yeah, it is an 84 audi. Filled it up maybe once a month.

Welcome to Germany. I look forward to meeting you when you get here. Hopefully you will get in with our group and have some fun with us. When are you arriving? My son is also coming to Spang. He gets here on the 15th and will be working in CE. Maybe you can meet him.

You can find almost any price car you want. Just look around and you will find something. I don't know about Spang but they probably have a decent Lemon Lot. I know Ramstein has a large one. Normally there will be 20-50 cars out there at any given time. Prices anywhere from 500-35,000 with a variety of brands, etc. If you can take a little time you can find just about anything. If you get lucky, sometimes you can get one for free. I know a couple of guys this summer who were leaving and had a beater for work that they just gave away. I wouldn't worry about it.

If there is anything I can do to help you, let me know. My email is kc10a@t-online.de

...the lemon lot, some friend tried to find a car there and did test drive a few and said: most of them he was afraid would not make it back to the lemon lot.
My daily driver is a Corolla, number one most dependable in
ADAC statistics since 15 years.
BMW I can not recommend as Winter driver in Bitburg/Spang area,
they are getting stuck up/down the hills when there is snow/ice on the roads. (Get a frontwheeler!)
Golf is a good choice too, but do not get one of those
race-car-modded-look ones, they are overprized, the previous owners probably thought they are Schumachers and beat them k.o.
Any Diesels are usually dependable.
Audi is ok also, I personally do not like Opelz, but that is just me, they are ok.
The older (cheaper) french and italian cars mostly are rustbuckets, check the body carefully before buying.
I can keep an open eye, when there is something good/cheap offered, I let you know.

Welcome to Germany! You will love it here. You can check the local military paper at http://www.ka-ads.de and go to the classifieds there you can see alot of cars for sale... They change the paper every Tuesday and most days they will add a few more things, so good luck...the lemon lots are also a great place to look... If there is anything you will need or want before you get here I will be running back and fourth to Spang for my son so it won't be a problem, just let me know... Looking forward to meeting you.

Thanks for all the info, peoples! I'll have about 1500 bucks to spend, so it sounds like I should be OK. Whatever I have left goes to the Z/28 fund.:-ok:;) I sure am looking forward to hooking up with you guys. Later!

Hell no! I bought a '91 Subaru Justy. Reliable, for a POS "island bomb". Big enough to haul the scuba gear and golf clubs. I was going to be a health nut and ride by bike everywhere, but that lasted as long as my first ride home uphill in a blinding rainstorm. There are a couple f-bods and slowstangs. Even a Indy pace 'Vette. But I had the skinny on the local driving conditions from some guys that were here before. So the Camaro stayed with my folks.
