Post subject:  UK Monaro Road Test

Autocar did a brief test on a 302hp Monaro coupe and it ran to 60 in a disappointing 6.9 seconds - fast but hardly meteoric. However, they praised the chassis balance and handling on the standard 18 inch wheels and I guess that what it lacks in straight line performance, it will lap up through the corners. I hope the GTO gets a little more power. The Monaro appears to be destined to appear in the UK (not Europe, just the UK) in 2003 for 27k. At that price, it's a bit of a bargain given that the discontinued Z28 sold for about 25k and a '99 HSV was recently being sold for 25k. Yup, a solid, good handling coupe is just what I need for my next car. Shame it looks like a pile of crap then (the testers likened it to a Volvo coupe but I keep thinking Omega)and I think we deserve a redesign as well (or a rebadged GTO). I wonder what they'll call it. I hope they don't badge it as a Vauxhall, that would be suicide. Their best car was badged Lotus Carlton but they can't use that name since they sold it.

Since you can use a right-hander, just get it from HSV (Holden Special Vehicles). The Monaro GTS has everything you'll need for starters, to include 410 HP!!!

Here's a link with a little info on the GTS:

Of course, if money is no problem then you'll want to check out this HSV version with a 427: http://www.hsv.com.au/vy/showcars/showcar.asp

Here's a link with a lot of 2004 GTO info and concept drawings:

I picked up an Autocar from last year and they did a 0-100-0 test with a 410bhp Holden HSV and hate to say it but the 0-100 on that was 13.1 which is still only stock M6 Z28 country. 60 was 5.5. Just goes to show those tenths are hard to come by. I did note it was done at Santa Pod though which claims 0.2 seconds.
I just don't see how you can say that car is good-looking, it looks like a taxi. If that's the best that GM can do, I'm afraid that my next 4 seater will be a Skyline or a Mitsubishi Evo VII. The Evo runs 60 in 4.4 and to 100 in 11.2 and you can buy a new one on import for 23k. It handles too. I'd have to buy an LT1 as a second car though.
