Anybody know what the big difference between a regular 454 and a Gen V/VI motor? I picked up what was supposed to be a 454 and it was a 69" 396. I called and piched a bitch and he told me he just got in a 454 Gen V motor that's about 2 months old and broke. Rods or crank. I'm new at playing with BBC's so it'll be fun tearing it apart to fix.

What little I know:
The GEN V/VI has a different oil pan and timing chain cover (and of course different seals to go along). The V/VI also has revamped oiling with priority oiling to the main bearings (vital difference if you want to install a remote oil filter or cooler). The flywheel/flexplate is also weighted different for a V/VI (don't know about balancer). Heads and intakes will swap with no problems (although I think there are some slight cooling flow differences). I can't help you out concerning the crank and rods (other than the obvious stroke difference), but I do know that ALL 1969 396's had a forged steel crank. If the 396 has the factory heads they will be closed chamber and good for higher compression and probably better flow. There are some junk 454's out there so you may actually be better of with the 396 depending on what you're planning to do.

I do have a stock Gen VI oil pan with oil pump pick-up, and also a flexplate if you need one.

You never did answer my question about that rear end with 4.10 gears you were thinking about getting rid of.

That 4.10 is a 10 bolt. I'm gonna hold on to it a while cause Hotrod says he can get me a R700 Trans. With the overdrive I may be able to cruise a little on the highway.
