Well, I got my teaching assignement from the DoD in Washington today, and they placed me at Sembach Middle School on Sembach Air Base. I know it's in the K-Town school district, but that's really all I know about the place.
Any of you guys live at or near Sembach? Have any infor that you can share with me about the quality of life and whatnot? Anything would be greatly appreciated! Thanks fellas!

Sembach is really nice man. The housing is nice, but you could always live off base. I used to patrol out there, so I went inside many of the buildings.. It is quiet and the school has recently been renovated.

Excellent! The base commander has housing available for me, but it's $650/mo! So they said they are trying to find a roomie in oreder to cut the cost. I'm not going to have any form of transportation while I'm there except my Adidas shoes, so I hope whatever housing I get is fairly close to the school.
Silas... would your friend be able to help me find some decent housing for a decent price?
At any rate, any help you folks can offer would be awesome! I look forward to hopefully meeting some of you after the new year!

You won't get paid extra for housing?
When you get here, couldn't you get yourself a $500 beater to drive around? Or would you not be able to register it thru the US. If you have to get German tags it could become a little bit costlier.
Can anyone give an estimate on how much it would cost to put a 500eur car on the road for a year, inspection, registration, taxes, etc.?
Sounds like you're going to a great place. You WILL enjoy your stay over here.

Car and taxes aren't necessarily the problem, insurance is ... if you don't have an "old" insurance you can use, you start out at something like 175% or even 230% or so ... at that rate, e.g. a '92 75hp Corolla would run a whopping 1800€ a year just liability ... I don't know if you can get some deals through the insurance you have in the states, or Aafes, you may want to make sure you bring some kind of proof of cars insured in the states and the rebate levels earned there, maybe then you can get some deals with german insurances, too ...

Brian, if you want to send me your email address, a guy in my office lives near Sembach. His wife is a counselor at the Sembach Elementary so she knows a lot about the schools over there. She also has a lot of years in DODDS so she might be able to answer some of your questions if you have any. My email address is:
kc10a@t-online.de
I also live in the area if I can be of any help.

Why is everyone leaving AZ. I guess people have to leave AZFBA.com for a reason. I loved Germany when I was there. I didnt have my car but I had a nice time going to clubs there. The trains were a little weird and so were the Hotels. Once again you guys need to keep in touch.

I curently am insured through USAA, so I don;t know if that'll give me an edge or not. I have a few discounts on my policy as well, so maybe that would help?
I was definitly considering picking up a "disposable car" while I'm there just so I wo;t have to rely on public transportation or others in order to get around.... I DO want to tour some of Europe while I'm there, ya know!
