Yep, its more about 50 to 200EUR, 4 points on the license and you loose your license for 1 month... urgh.

If everybody is able to switch from red to green a big mess is guaranteed.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't, as the two operate on different types of systems..

I ran a red light by mistake this summer downtown Wiesbaden... and was worried about it for several weeks. Luckily I ended up paying about 56 Euro and got 3 points only.
Propably because it was the first time and my records are good - besides that it was in the Friday afternoon traffic jam and the cars were not moving.

Dunno if there are any similar systems in use in Germany, at least not in Hersfeld, as I've never seen a red light change to green with Police/Ambulance/Firetruck pulling up ... and knowing Germany, it's most likely not as simple to manipulate as the US system being talked about ....

No, the german lights won't change, the ones downtown cities at least are controlled by centralized switchboards.
No need to, because the emergency vehicles (police, fire, ambulance)
have the right-away no matter if green or red when using their blue lights.

In a construction area at Pirmasens they used a new 'intelligent' traffic light. It is working with infrared, counting the number of cars coming through at each direction and adjusting the light intervalls to the traffic.
Worked pretty well, almost no waiting time. The less busy side was short,
the busy side stayed green longer, changing by itself as needed.
