I don't know what the clinical/medical term is but it has to do w/ paralaysis. Sometimes when I'm sleeping not dreaming just sleeping I'll wake up and discover I can't move literally nothing! I can open my eyes and that's it. I get this at least twice a wk and sometimes when I awake I'm in some funky position and become claustophic at the same time. I'm screaming but my wife can't hear me at all so I think it's a dream or something but then my boy (Bugga my cat) will sniff my face or something and I know I'm awake.

This chit is totally buggin me out because I can guarantee this problem if I instantly go to sleep on my back in which I seldom do. I asked my Pop about it and he says he gets it too from time to time but doesn't know of anyone else that does. We like to think we're being abducted (J/K) but seriously it's a weird experience. I've had this since I've been a little kid. The one and only time I ever could move my mouth my wife was laying next to me and I literally said "hit me I can't move" she thought I was joking so cussed her out. She kicked me out the bed and I hit the floor still paralyzed for another 10 sec's! I didn't feel a thing. I'm scared one day I'm going to be paralyzed from it if I'm not able to figure out what's going on.

Anyone else ever hear of this?

Dude, that is scary. Have you been seen by a doctor yet? That is realy strange. I hope for the best and don't worry you will be OK.

Do't feel aloneon this ,I get this same thing also . maybe 5 or 6 timesa year . But that is 5 or 6 times too often for me.

Roy what the hell is then? If this is anything what people go through that are paralyzed then I truly feel sorry for them. That's no way to live. I've had panic attacks from this and can't move a thing. I've learned how to break out of it though and it's not easy doing it either. Longest I've been under the spell is 5 mns. I average 1 mn or so on most occasions.

Wow, that sounds like some scary ch!t!!! My best friend at Langley had sleep apnea (not sure how its spelled). I know it was awful for him, but that is the only sleeping disorder that I have had a freind of mine have. Have you been to a doctor about it? Do you take any meds often that might lay cause to this? I hope you get that looked in too, sounds like you can't be sleeping to good!

I used to get this a lot. Believe me when I tell you you're still asleep and the cat that is giving you a reality check is also part of the dream. It's your mind looking for something real to cionfirm you're awake and producing another figment of your imagination. For example, if your cat wakes you up in this way, your mind will produce it to try to wake you.

I used to get total paralysis, couldn't move, sometimes that invisible hands were strangling me and I was helplessly pinned. I felt I was doing everything in my power to alert someone but couldn't scream. I was damned certain I was awake and literally when I had exerted myself to the maximum, I used to force myself out of the "paralysis" having woken myself up in effect. Sometimes i thought I'd woken myself up but wa still asleep. I even used to think it was some paranormal activity as when I was a student, I had a bed in an old cottage that would vibrate even when I was awake and that was where I first got these dreams.

I now know they're dreams as my gf said she saw me twitching and murmuring when it last occured and just assumed I was dreaming. I've told her to wake me if she ever sees it again. Part of the "cure" was RECOGNISING that it was a dream. When it happened, i just didn't panic and said to myself "I know this is a dream and it can't hurt me" but I would then try to wake myself up in some way - by thinking of an alarm clock etc.

Something to do with insecurity or fear, I'm sure.
The mind is an odd thing and works at lightning speed. For example, those dreams where you'd swear it lasted for several hours and then the alarm integrates itself into the dream as a firebell or something.

I believe the laymens term is lucid dreaming.

Thanks for the link. Well I assure I know I'm dreaming but THERE are times when I'm awake ie, watching the news etc in real time. That isn't awake I don't know what is then. I don't have dreams like you mentioned or the threads mentioned either. I'm just sleeping and then I wake up and I realize I can't move. I've seen my wife pass by look at me and go about here business and once I really do have the ability to move she thinks I'm just laying there. I describe to hear exactly what she is doing and she's like "damn".

No I haven't seen a doctor about it. Maybe I will but for now I was just wondering if others may have experienced it in which case I see plenty do it's just never really talked about.

Yep, lucid dreaming, and it sure does feel real. When I was a kid, I used to have a reoccuring dream, where I somehow managed to be hanging on to the edge of a skyscraper. I knew I was dreaming, though, so I would intentionally let go, to sort of feel the exhileration of falling. It was pretty cool, and I wish I could have dreams like that now..
