for your hotcam.:) I have heard that if you are going to cam it the hot cam is not worth the money, but $50 sounds ok to me....

H/C is OK, but not what I expected...I want rumble and lots of it!!! It seems to make pretty good power though.

get a cam with lobes so big it looks like a crank, is my motto :)

You ought to become pretty proficient changing out cams by the time your done Jamey. Maybe you should try alittle porting on the 'ol heads this time?

I'm still sitting on the fence cuz I cant decide on a setup.

The cam change on a LS1 is really easy, if you take your time, it's almost impossible to mess up.

The worst part was removing the pulley

I like your motto by the way :)

what are the specs on that cam, who makes it does it come with springs.

Comp Cams 229/229 .532/.532 110 LS just the cam. You can use either CC 915 or 941 springs with it.

I bet it is really choppy, does it stall? I can spin 6600 is that enough? Thanks

It sounds like a drag car...insanely choppy!!! No, doesn't stall, he had to drill out the hole in his TB, but most mid sized cam users do. He also raised his idle to 1000.

It peaks at 5900 as per desktop dyno, so if you can get to 6600 you'll be shifting on the downside but you really need to get to about 7500 to take full advantage of this monster.

Here are the specs on the cam I ordered Comp Cams Custom grind 224/224 duration 561 lift on a 112 LSA. I may need some tech advice on the install. How long will it take? It is going in the 2000 Firehawk.

That is a very good cam you selected, what springs are you going to run?

I put a link to a good write-up in the Hot Cam thread in the LS1 tech section.

Oh, OK...This is kind of long...sorry

A lot of people that I know personally are having problems with the 941 springs breaking. One thing that has been helping is getting them cryogenically treated before installing them. If this is something you are interested in, I know a good place to get them done, E-Mail me and I'll hook you up.

Another problem with them is that they need at least a 2 minute idle warm up period and they will most likely need to be replaced in a year.

Comp Cams is to the point now that they do not recommend them for the LS1s and are going to stop replacing them under warranty because they are not made for that application.

This info came from a local (major) distributor that is up to his neck in broken 941 problems. If you call Comp Cams and ask them what spring they recommend for your cam, I'll bet they tell you NOT to use the 941 and that the 915 is the correct spring.

FWIW, the 915 spring is not much better of an alternative and Comp Cams realizes this. They just came out with new seats and retainers to work with the 987 springs which are a dual spring and MUCH stronger and will last the duration. The difference with the 987s is that they have a 1.473 outer diameter, so you will need to have your head machined to hold the new "special" 1.400 cups. This will result in a valvetrain setup that you will never have to worry about!!! Plus while you get the heads machined for the cups, you can have them milled .030 to bump up the compression to around 10.9:1 good for about 8-14 HP and 10 - 15 Ft. Lbs across the board. Remember to get shorter pushrods though.

The part numbers:

Springs 987's (about $85.00)
Seat Cups 4712's (about $40)
Retainers - Cromoly - 775's (about $55)
Retainers - Titanium - 776's (about $160)

After extensive research, that is the combo that I am going to go with (with the Titaniun retainers). Many parts shops do not know about the new seats and retainers yet because they were just released this month, so they are not in the catalog yet, just have them call Comp Cams to get a price.

Not trying to shoot your combo down, just inform you and anyone else thinking about doing a cam swap. THAT SHOULD MEAN EVERYBODY THAT OWNS A LS1!!!!! LoL

Good luck with the cam swap, it's really not too bad.

Ok so I should send the springs back? I know what a broken spring could do to the engine. what is breaking them duration or lift? Thanks for the info I will do some research and get the right parts

It is not the duration or the lift, it is just the nature of the H11 steel they use for them. People with smaller lift cams are breaking them in low RPM situations. Some people have had them break after only a few thousand miles.

A few people that I know that have 941s actually carry extra springs with them, just in case. I can't really tell you what you should do, you may want to look into it a little though. Maybe if you decide to keep them get them cryogenically treated just as a precautionary measure.
