Not really the right forum, but ...

Just read today that Chevy has issued a recall for all 98 and up 'vettes ... seems like they may have the steering wheel lock locking up while driving ...

I haven't heard anything about it, either, but that certainly doesn't mean it hasn't happened yet. Maybe in the 'States..

I think it has to do with the electronic steering column lock that the Corvette has contrary to our mechanical locks.

However that was known for quite some time (I think 2 years or so) and GM is starting the recall NOW...? A bit late.

AFAIK there have been accidents because of this but no fatal ones.

Ben

The full lowdown is this recall has stopped me buying a couple of Z06's. The recall has been announced but won't be instigated until the second quarter of 2004. Basically when the steering lock fails to disengage (or engages), the fuel pump is supposed to shut off and it doesn't so the recall won't cure the fault, it will just make sure the fuel cut-off intervenes.

The recall is therefore largely pointless as it doesn't cure the problem, simply renders the car "safe" when it happens. The cure is the same as it's always been - get a column lock bypass kit. Now I know this, I can go find a Z06. Think I've found one but waiting for a report back.
