Can't believe it - well, I should after what I've seen in Top Gear before ...
Guy from Top Gear just had the Porsche Cayenne in the test ... ended with him ranting about the design ... like "The front looks like they tried to make it look like the 911 - but it doesn't. And from there [the windshield] back, it looks like they didn't care. [..] I'd rather walk back to the studio than drive another yard in it. In fact, I do. Hm... that way [in the middle of nowhere, walking off]" ...
They don't care to really tear up cars ...
They even (kind of) tore up the SLR - ranting about the plastic interior ... and the brakes (being too good, "it's either on or off"). Wonder how they even get test cars anymore ...

Automakers send their cars to people like that to truly find out what people think. They want to know what the flaws are, so they can correct them.. Also, if they make the car look good, chances are that people might buy them! I love that show..

Yeah, but they do seem to speak their mind - in contrast to stations like Sat1, Vox etc., who don't seem to look for flaws ... especially not if it's a german made car, and especially not when a german car is up against a foreign one ... even when the (IMHO) more important plus-sides of foreign cars win over less important facts of the domestics, somehow the german cars still come out the "winner" ...

I know what you mean. Some people don't like to admit that "other" people make better cars. People need to know the absolute truth about a car, though, if they plan on buying it. They don't need someone to lie to them, only to find out later that it was BS.

BBC has it on every Friday at 1830. I know it comes on at other times also, but I'm not sure what they are.. You should see it! They test drive at least one badass car per episode!

You can check the schedules at this website, just enter "top gear" as search string ...

just got a short part of a test they did of the Jaguar XJ220 ... hot car ... but the brakes are a POS, and the handling seems bad ... or to quote the one guy:
"[ once you are beyond the limits ] the car requires some special handling. Foot on the clutch, close your eyes and repeat after me. Our father who art in heaven, I'll be right with you"

We need more brutally honest people like that. Seems like the Brits know how to tell it the way it is. Look at Simon on American Idol. We should learn something from them and quit being "yes men". I wish that I got that show to see just how crappy some of those "Great" cars really are. Besides, I like the way that they beat the piss out of them.

Being "brutally honest" is a narrow way to walk ... and a hard one to stick to and stand up for ... being a part time journalist with some previous work time at computer mags, I know how hard it can be at times - sometimes it seems like politics. How to say some truth without stepping somebody on the feet too badly ... it all depends on the editor in chief as to how "honest" (and how brutal) you can be ... you're lucky when you get one that backs you up, and he's lucky if he doesn't get into trouble once the boss/owner finds out ... I know because I literally tore up a book for one report ... my back was covered, as the editor felt the same about the book ... but I imagine some - especially big - magazines that rely on advertisement income will feel pressure from the customers if they are too hones ... therefore, facts will be left away, or "beautified" ...
Doesn't seem to be the case with Top Gear

Shame that Clarkson makes American cars the butt of all his jokes based upon stupid prejudice and a daily diet of supercars. Most of it is purely for effect and the truth is largely irrelevant.
For example, he rubbished the Cadillac CTS-V without ever having driven it and described the back of the Crossfire as being like a dog doing it's business. Purely for a cheap laugh - but a laugh that will no doubt cost Chrysler sales.

Btw, found the Porsche Cayenne test on the net ... originally missed the first couple minutes ... Clarkson starts out standing in front of a tank, explaining it's built to go through things like houses, trees, etc.... then he shows a sports car, which is built to go around things ... but Porsche has decided it would be possible to combine the two - to build a "Tank GTI"
I guess I need to burn a CD of some of the reports and bring it to a meat ... you can really ROFL watching them ... and they have decent camera people there, too, shooting great footage ...

Just read this at the Top Gear website:
Quote: Beyond a joke
Here's a joke: what do you get if you mix an American car with a German car? The answer, the Chrysler Crossfire. Yes, that's a bad joke, but not as bad a joke as the Crossfire. This is a simply terrible car, which is odd because it has a cool name, AND a Mercedes engine. Leave it to the Americans to turn a good idea into complete rubbish.
Jeremy drove the manual, but was told by James that the automatic is even worse. Which was a puzzle becuase no one could imagine anything worse.

Right on the head. Clarkson is an ass-clown. I used to enjoy watching the show until I realized this moron seemed to have a standard that no one could hope to ever live up to.

Just had a new Top Gear on BBC World ... ran the SLR once more ... they did a stop from 120mph (!) and the car stopped within 240ft!!! Well, on they went something like this:
"Part of the braking power is the new ceramic brakes, which glow when you use them (take of the nice, warm glowing front brakes), and catch fire when you use them a lot (actual take of a couple small flames from the brakes!!!)"
Oh, and on the track, they ran it too ... the race driver they used didn't look like he had to work any to get the car around the course in a good time ... and it beat the GT3 easy, along with ALL the other cars they had one before by more than 3 seconds! (1:20 against 1:23 of the Zonda I think it was)

No kidding! I can only imagine if Top Gear were to get a hold of an F-Body.... I bet it'd be ugly... lol
