Just on Top Gear ... one of their crazy tests ...

Public Service Bulletin Question: Which car acts better on crosswinds? A Mondeo, or a 2CB?

To find out, the took the two cars, and some crosswind ...

generated by a 747's 4 engines at 57000 pounds of thrust.

Ran first the Mondeo behind the plane (about 50 yards back from the engines) ... when it hit the blast line, it rolled once, with windows blown out ...

Of course they tried the 2CV too ... it almost came apart just from hitting the blast, of course being blown way off ...

So, the bottom line is: If you want to be driving through a crosswind, you'd rather want to in a Mondeo than in a 2CV ... ;-)

(Sorry, didn't tape it for screenshots)

I saw that the other day and they said that all 4 engines were running at full throttle. I think that they only had 2 running. With all that thrust would have over powered the brakes. Any way those 2 cars were completely destroyed. It was GOOD!

On the 2CV I think I saw them only pushing the throttle on the two center engines ... also, I think it would have already blown the cars earlier than it did had the outer engines been running ... also, I recon the plane would have moved with all four running WOT ...

I saw that to. It looked like they were running the inboard motors and the outer were shut off. I think that they did that for the 2 of them. I know that the show can't afford to pay to run all 4.

Oh, its sooo sad I couldn`t see this

This is the small difference between German and English humor.
Nobody would try that in Germany.

Trying to get ahold of that one through the internet, I came across one from May ... they tested the new Lotus Exige (Hardtop, Hardcore version of the Elise) ... aginst an Apache ...
They gave the Apache a tough job - to lock on the Lotus with their rocket targetting radar while staying in the confines of their racetrack ...
Well, after running round the circuit for a while, the Apache still couldn't ... the Lotus just cornered too well ... :)

After that, they ran the Lotus on the track for the time --- it beat the GT3 and was only slightly slower than the Gaillardo ... (Stef, guess you need to get yourself a new car )

I think I will need to put together a collection of the best Top Gear takes sometime ... will probably be the coolest DVD ... :D

Garry, do you know which layout their test track has? sport auto tested the new Exige on the Nordschleife and the small Hockenheim course and it was slower than the GT3 on both tracks.

Not too sure about the layout, but I would say it's pretty good size - the GT3 ran a 1.26 something on it - can't really say how it compares to Hockenheim, but it has several curves that will provoke over/understeer depending on the car suspension ... on of the quickest cars they ever drove around it was the McLaren SLR ... but the Lotus endet up in the top 10 ATM ...

GOT IT! :D
Bottom line: You'll much rather want to be in a tornado, than behind a starting 747

HOly crap that was awesome!!! Could you imagine that kind of thrust behind a street car? Probably not, but that would be insane...
