That's pretty cool, but Jeeps and many other cars have had that technology for a while!

I had it in the Beemer, it's in the Volvo, but I must have missed it in my 'maro - do you have one in yours?
I'll take a look and see how much hassle it would be building it - possibly with a digital display instead of the dial display, and with some added features like total average, best long-time average, worst 5min average, etc ...

They'll probably start selling those. It would look good in a gauge pod.

I was thinking more in the direction of a full on-board computer ... 2x16 display or something like that ... I don't know which of the OBD-II features the F-Bodies support (and how they differ between the different models/years), but from the top of the head I would like to have or could think of implementing:
- fuel economy (OK, not really that important for you US folks )
- top speed
- average speed
- fuel amount left
- 0-60mph time
- quarter mile time/ET speed (dunno yet if I can reliably derive the information - probably just an approximation)
- R/T practice tree (wouldn't that be cool?)
Other stuff the OBD-II system has and could be displayed:
Fuel system status, engine load, engine coolant temperatur, fuel trim factor (?), fuel pressure, intake manifold pressure, engine RPM, ignition timing spark advance, intake air temperature, MAF sensor rate, throttle position, error codes (SES) ... dunno if there might even be more things an F-Body supplies ...
EDIT: Read that the LS1 has something like 150 additional fields of data that can be read via the OBD interface ... anybody have a list?
Stupid question: Do all 95-and-up F-Bodies have the OBD-II interface? Or did they upgrade it to something newer later?
Also, does anybody know (and/or can get ahold of) an OBD-II plug that will fit a 98 V6 Camaro?

And, would anybody else be interested in having an on-board computer like that? Cost probably in the range of 50-100€ at most ...

Garry, before you get involved with this project, can you send me your "bundle o' wires" auto-x timing system so that I can make something presentable out of it. I just finished a remote mic PA system for the auto-x and need something to do while I wait for a few performance parts for my go-kart.

Hm ... I was planing on a real PCB made for it - the current is way too large - I might need to get some other PCBs made soon, give me a week or two to see if it's going to be any time soon ... if it is, the whole circuit will only be slightly larger than credit-card size ...

According to this, F-Bodies from model year 95 should have a fully rules-compliant OBD-II ...

It's nice. I have all of these functions on my GTO.

Another "nice" little project would be a programmable "shift light" like they have on the monster-sized revcounters that the dragracers use. You could even have an orange led light up 200 rpm earlier to warn you that the red leds are due soon.
ps: mine needs to light up at 11 700 rpm.

Doable ... the extra two ports for LED out are no problem, the microcontroller needs to have some amount of flash/eeprom memory, so I can't go with the smaller ones - therefore I will have spare I/O pins left Not like the timing tree which used every single one, and re-used two input lines through some digital logic as I didn't have any left (and that controller has 32 I/O pins!!!) Quote: ps: mine needs to light up at 11 700 rpm.
Yeah, rub it in That's the real reason for the post, right?
P.S. - Problem might be accuracy - the OBD-II interface only allows for some 40 queries per second max, so that's most likely not an allways-on-feature ... but might be one of the modes ... (would different shift points depending on which gear you're in make any sense? I know the torque/hp rating doesn't change, so I would tend to say no, but some people have strange ideas )

Go on the internet and do a search for "Raptor Shift Light" They make one that you change the RPM activation points by turning some dials. I don't know if they go to that high an RPM or not. I hope I'm getting one for Christmas. I plan to hide it in my air conditioning vent. It is a simple 3 wire hookup for the Camaro. Supposedly they will work for any car. Cost less than $100. If you want to change the shift point, you just take a small screwdriver and turn the dial.

I know the Raptor, it's really "kewl".
But, I need a shift light with a 200 rpm pre-warning. My R1 kart motor rev so quick that you will be past the shift point before you have time to react. Sooooo....... if we bother Garry long enough he might design something like that.

Hm ... what kind of input can you give me? Sounds to me like a layman's practice project ...
I expect you have some kind of electric pulse - how many pulses per RPM? I could run the input through a 1€ microcontroller as a counter input, than run a RTC in parallel and every e.g.10th second or so check the number of pulses ... will you need variable RPM warnings, or will two (or multiple) fixed shift RPMs do? Could e.g. use a 8-element LED band to give you even more "warning time" ...
