Hello Val and Roy,

I had hear that you had some experience about transmission coolers.

I plan to invest a transmission cooler with fan for my TRANS AM 96. But I don´t realy know what normaly fits and which fan can work with the pressure of a automatic transmission?

I´m watching on the PermaCool Maxi-Cool Junior with fan or somephing similar.

Can you tell me which transmissioncooler you had chose?

Did you have use a termostath which opens on one special degree?

Don't worry about a fan or a thermostat . Get the biggest cooler that you can fit . Then run your feed line to your new cooler inlet , then exit your cooler with the feed line tothe inlet of your radiator cooler and then exit your radiator cooler and plumb into your return line to your transmission.
reaching min operating temperature is critical in the 4l60e transmission, that is why you have to run it this way unless youare a all out race machine.

Here is a how to on a LT1 Camaro. He ran his lines the opposite way and is not having a problem. So you cantake for what its worth.

On very hot days middel in the city on slowly traffic I get a too hot transmission (+if I do some little sprints). So I plan to buy a transmissioncooler with fan. I have to figure out how much place I have to use the biggest cooler with fan. I plan to buy the PermaCool one.

Do you use a thermostat, which opens the way to the cooler? Or do you have it open round the time?

Which Cooler do you use?

Danix sounds like you are set in what you want to do. I just think your wasting your money for fan or a thermostat, especially if you mount to the front side of the radiator. If anything do the fan relay mod and turn on both radiator fans either manually or at a lower temp with an optional adjustable sending unit.

As for coolers ithink my oil cooler is either a Earl or a hayden. But there are several goodones out there. Oh Btw I have a T56 transmission.

I want only the best. :wink: But not everytime is the best stuff the best thing. :roll:

It is good to know which experience other people have had. I´m glad to get informations from you too.

I have only to figure out if it fits. The front space is so st*** and d*** to messure it 100%. :cry:

I preferr plate fin coolers . Benefits are less pressure drop, compact design, better heat exchange .
Btw that is what me and Val used was Fluidyne heatexchangers.

Didn't know you have an oil cooler, Roy... (since when)? Or transmission oil cooler (with a manual tranny?)...?

Yeah, Me and Val did the coolers during the winter. As for the cooler for the tranny and the axle, I haven't found a durable electric pump that is priced right.

Sorry I didn't get to this till now. The oil cooler is AWSOME and not that much $$$ either.....except for the 9 qts of Mobile 1 when it's time to change the oil. Oil temps at H-Ring reached 210 degrees(with the oil cooler), tranny was up around 275 degrees. I've had to run a cover plate on the cooler so the oil will get up and stay up at 150-170 degrees when just driving around town and on the autobahn. Remember that is has been winter weather so with it warming the plate will have to come off.

Danix, set it up like Roy said and you'll be very happy!!!!

Roy, maybe one of these days we can find a decently priced pump for the tranny and rearend. I wonder if the pumps NASCAR use would be any good???

That is the peak temp I guess... is that too hot for our MANUAL trannies, what do you think? I'm using normal Dexron III ATF as the pre-2000 M6 doesn't like synthetic fluid.

Ben My problem was shifting getting notchy snd sometimes a blocked or a missed shift. Sure signs things were getting too hot in the gear box.

Never experienced that, so I guess I'm OK (tranny temps).

At the temps I was running the shifting was just fine and I was using the Dextron III also.

I make some pictures of the installation for all FBE Members. :wink: Think this would help other people after me too.

Does anybody know if there are a difference between manual and automatic transmission coolers? Or are they all the same?

They are the same, just the size is different. Naturally a cooler for an automatic will be larger
