Experimenting the obvious ... just had a "test" on TV - what happens, when you change gears to Ralley (aka "Reverse") at 60mph. They tried in a Merc coupe w/ auto tranny. Presumably, Mercedes technicians warned them that the car might flip over. Yeah, right, a rwd car flips over? How?

Anyway, what surprise, the driver had a hard time even switching to reverse, and when he successfully did, all that happened was the car slowed down and stopped, and yellow smoke from the tranny ... also, transmission oil spilled out, and - surprise - when he tried to put in a gear again, the car didn't move anymore. Who would have thought that would happen? :hammer:

I do that to every rental that get with a Automatic transmission. I call throttle induced dynamic braking.

Some manufactures are getting smart and adding electronic or Hydraulic lockout to keep that from happening now adays :(

Hm ... don't current cars have some solenoid or something to keep from using Rallye mode? I know the T56 has one, as some people mistake the Reverse-solenoid for the 2nd gear one when installing the !CAGS mod...

:(

i used it to paralel park occasionally.
Worked quite well in combinaton with a limited slip rearaxle.
You just have to give enough throttle not to stall the motor when putting it in reverse.
Then the rear will pull the car sideways :)
Done it many times (upto aprox. 50km/h) and it didn't hurt the automatic much, well not as much as engine coolingfluid in the autobox due to a bursted auto oil cooler line in the water radiator
