Actually there are 2 of them.
Here's the situation, 1997 Dodge truck 4X4, 5.9ltr, auto, loaded. Parts replaced; plugs, wires, cap, rotor, injectors, IAC sensor, TPS sensor, MAP sensor, alternator, battery, cam & crank position sensors, timing chain & gears. Compression test show all 8 cyclinders within limits (almost exactly the same).
The problem; upon start up the engine runs as if only 6 cyclinders are firing until it reaches operatering tempture. Once at tempture it runs perfect. Once in a while it will give a code "P304" (#4 cyclinder misfire). It does not do this all the time, seems to be only when it's really moist or sitting longer than 3-4 days. Any ideas????

2nd Question; same size motor(brand new 2500miles on it), trans and options but in a 1999 Durango. Motor runs fine, (while cold) put into gear and at a cruising speed (speed doesn't matter nor does gear selection) it will skip as if the trans is trying to decide what gear to shift to. It only does it at a steady speed, under acceleration or decceleration it's perfect. Any ideas??

I'm stumped by both....then again I've probably missed something very simple

Maybe an O2 sensor on the first one. Maybe its the one for that bank.

The second one, how about the TPS. It would make a difference how the computer tells the tranny.

I don't know. I'm still asleep. I just know you should not have bought Dodge!

the first one could be a water leak in the cylinder
Eg cracked head / gasket failure.

i had the same problem , when started it would miss a cylinder and when warmed up it would start to work again...
the head was cracked.

you can test this by releiving the coolant pressure after you have shut down the engine.
If you start the engine cold and it is gone for sure you have a leak.
if not it still can have a leak.

i didn't notice it by looking at the coolant, the coolant level didn't drop much

second one i have no idea sounds like a electronic failure due to a bad sensor of some sort ??

Jason & JeeJee,
Thanks for the input!! I've ordered all the o2 sensors for the 97. I also have the TPS for the Durango but have not installed it yet. Wouldn't a cracked head show a loss of compression during a compression test or signs of coolant on the plugs??

Jason,
If owning one Dodge is bad then I guess I'm going to be EVIL when I pick up my SRT10 (stock 500hp 525tq) in DEC!! The wife's new dodge diesel stock 325hp 610tq can't argue with that!!

Hey Val,

it didn't show up on the compression test

one time i could see it on the sparkplug , it looked a bit browner then the others, but if you are running ritch it might not show up at all which was the case with my homebuild 6 cyl. turbo :?

Jason, I'll be there in DEC this year.

JeeJee, thanks I'll check the plugs again and try the other stuff you mentioned.

My first thought.
