Wonder how long it took to mod the car, engine & tranny to fit ... and does it have 6 reverse gears and one forward? ![]() |

Not impressed. There's enough space to mount a V8 on the Porsche tranny and it propably gives you bragging rights in the pleb circle. The down side: Resale value.... Zero! Weight distribution.... With that lump of iron hanging behind the rear axle you will be flying backwards off the bend pretty quick! Durability.... Naja! Nobody is going to do that to a new Porsche. Unfortunately the older ones (like in the foto) has fairly shitty transmissions which WILL break under V8 power. Do it and have fun. The Porschephiles will have a good laugh at you. And don't think we will let you come and play with us! |

well stef i hate to burst your bubble ![]() quote : "Reduced weight of the LS-1 is also a HUGE advantage over the "big" 911 motors. Weighing less than a completely dressed 3.0L NA motor, the LS-1 has turbo performance with much less than turbo six weight. With less weight in the rear and more power under your right foot, you can see why a converted 911 is so much fun to drive." |

Now I am not all that smart, but I know that the 911 motor is also an all-aluminium motor. So the rest is a logical deduction.... 6 pistons are lighter than 8 pistons 6 cyl crank is lighter than 8 cyl crank 2x 3 cyl heads are lighter than 2x 4 cyl heads no water and fan is lighter than waterjackets, water, waterpump etc. drysump (no oil) is lighter than a big pan full of oil no harmonic damper is lighter than a harmonic damper the list goes on. Maybe you should not believe all the sales pitches you read in the internet. If you do, I can make you a great deal on a bottle of snake oil. It cures aids, makes you live longer, prevent your engine from seizing and will make you a winner with the girls. |

Personally, I think it is kinda cool. Sometimes you just have to do things that don't have to make sense to anyone else. Not too long ago, Hor Rod had a picture of a 944 someone had put a blown small block in. The blower was almost as high as the roof. Don't know how it runs or handles, but it has to be fun. As far as not being able to hang out with the Porsche clubs, who cares. Bet he finds some cool guys who think what he did is neat. When I was younger, some of my friends and I would do engine swaps on the weekend just for fun. Things like a 283 in a Jeep, Olds engine in a old Ford pickup, Caddy engine in a 50 ford, etc. Knew a guy that took the back seat out of a Beetle and replaced it with a 327. I've also seen a 427 in a Fiero that was a street car. It was fun just to see if you could do it. That is hot the hot rod hobby got started. No fancy engineering, just figure it out as you go. It's not good when you start thinking that you have to fit into a certain mold. Cars are cool and fun to play with. |

AFAIK the porsche engine has 6 single, detached cylinders (otherwise you can´t get airflow around them) - so the block is also longer - and i guess as it´s aircooled the aluminium is also way thicker (plus all those cooling fins) than on a watercooled engine were heat is removed inside the engine. A full dressed LS1 is 226kg (plus radiator, hoses, blah), a 1974 3.0 turbo engine 206kg (both according to the web), so it´s surprisingly not much of a difference ![]() I also think it's kinda cool... on the other hand, i don't know what's bad about having a porsche engine ![]() |

wasn't the old porche engine forced air cooled ? that should add some kilo's and chris is right, 6 thick seperate cylinders with large cooling fins and with 4 long heavy studs per cyl. X6 = 24 long heavy studs 2 camshafts with 2(?) chains and 2 chain tensioners and the crank doesn't look to light too, compared to the 2 rods per throw on the v8 : ![]() the ls1 is FULLY dressed 225kilo's (the automatic version is only 208 FULLY dressed) that includes the large airco compressor, steering pump , and the stupid smog stuff / pump. I really do think that the weight issue is actually NOT an issue.... ![]() ![]() |
