I absolutely LOVE BBQ'ing, grilling and smoking. On average I grill 2 times a week....even in the winter. I have not had a better bunch of ribs than my Apple Jack babyback ribs.

Is anyone else completly obsessed with BBQing?

Also, does anyone know where to get lump charcoal?

I love to eat it...just not cook it.

Oh...don't get me wrong. That is definitely part of the process. LOL.

I'm from South Africa. Grilling ("braai" in my language) is part of our religion!

I dabble in it .

If your talking Lump charcoal as in Holzkohle, you can pick it up at most baumarkts , grocery stores, and gas stations. Comes in different wood varieties and sizes.

2slow- What type of foods and seasonings do South Africans typically use? I am wanting to try different things.

Roy- Holzkohle is exactly what I have been looking for, but the only thing I have been able to find is Kamin(sp) Holzkohle. It was not very good. My preferred Hlzkohle is Apfel (which I have not found at all) or Hickory. I don't know if that is even a German species. I would be very happy to find either in lump or in logs.

I actually imported logs of apple from the states for my last smoked Turkey. It was amazing for it, but even better on my ribs!

At dual-digit sub-zero temperatures outside, BBQ doesn't really appeal that much ...

Finding hickory over here should prove pretty hard, and BBQ charcoal in winter will also not be that easy ... some places like Hornbach or so might have some available, but I reckon until the weather warms up some, you'll mostly find stuff meant for being used in fireplaces or stoves ...

Reminds me of the XXMASBBQ (x-treme XMAS BBQ) we did here at work in December (yes we're crazy).
We have one of those Cactus Jack smokers for that:

Cool thing! Saw some cooking show that used one of those, supposed to get real good results ...

The Ramstein commissary usually has Royal Oak charcoal. I don't know if they have it in the winter or not. That is what I always use in my smoker and it works real well.
