Since today's a German holiday I thought I'd get a little slack from the airmen, but no. Too low and too loud. The exhaust part kills me, one tip was 93db and the other was 96db, so even though the combined sound is below 95 db, it fails (remember, this is one muffler). The low part is the torque arm crossmember and I've wanted to replace this, just not yet. I'm stretched for time, but now I have to work on this.

I think my only option is the Jegster torque arm. It's not what I really want to use, but it should get the job done.

If the airmen have already stamped your registration failed then pay to have a new one reissued. Just say that washed it . It will cost 30 dollars for a reissue. Then take your car to Taylor barracks in Mannheim for inspection. They seem to be a little more level headed. I got both my cars to pass at Taylor where previously they were failed at Kapaun. Also the inspection is more thorough in regards to suspension and brake testing. Goodluck.

Thanks for the info. I don't think I can do anything for another month because of my schedule. I may have to order the Jegster anyway, because if Taylor fails me, then I won't have much time left.

My torque arm crossmember hangs low, there's no hiding it (damn the new reg!). The exhaust can be "patched" with steel wool, I didn't add anything today.

Johnny, I am sorry to hear of the fail. I am sooooo tired of hearing any fails. They can get to be very picky with whoever they decide to and let others slide. It really all is in the timing and who does it.

Are you running a 12 bolt or will a stock arm work? I have a Spohn or BMR TrackPak jsut sitting if that might help ya.

Roy is exactly right. Just go back like you have not been inspected and start from scratch. You also have to be ready by knowing the reg's. They don't hesitate to fail you, but there are a bunch of loopholes and correct ways of testing. They usually ignore that though.

I have the impression it's even worse than German rules.

It is basically a combined inspection. I think they take the worst of both and add them together. My problem is that I paid to ship my cars under one set of rules and then they change them while you are here causing major costs for replacement. The db testing is horrendous. Who actually knows what decibel your exhaust is? The mil is usually here for less than 4 years. Is it really worth spending hundreds to thousands of dollars to replace things that work....just not the way they want them to.

Billy, it does not matter how loud it is if you can prove that your exhaust is entirely stock. The db reading only applies if it has been modified or replaced in any way.

BTW, it would definitely be in the 95 db range though.

I'm due for an inspection in a few months, so we'll see how it does.

There is a store called Conrads, it sells sound meters for like 30 Euros if you want to test your own. Last year a buddy of mine failed for being too loud so he stuffed his exhaust with steel wool, I went in with mine 2 weeks later and passed, but I managed to get my car to idle at about 400 rpm, so it was suprisingly quiet, even without mufflers. I ll have to see if the same trick works this year.

I'll be damned. It did not say it in previous editions, but the new Reg does say that even the manufacture installed systems must be below 95 db. This is freakin' rediculous. Here is the exerpt:

All exhaust systems (manufacturer installed, or after-market) of motorcycles and automobiles will be inspected for noise levels according to the procedures in paragraph C-25. Motor vehicles exceeding the noise level of 95 decibels will be rejected.

According to the American, Speech-Language-Hearing Association:

100 dB = snowmobile, chain saw, pneumatic drill
90 dB = lawnmower, shop tools, truck traffic, subway

Mind you the 95 dB is at 1/2 your redline.

Johnny, FYI. Here is the limits for height. Are you really below this?

c. Minimum body ground clearance must not be less than 8 centimeters (3.15") for flexible body parts such as ground-effect spoilers or air dams and 11 centimeters (4.33") for hard parts such as exhaust, frame components, and suspension.

I wonder what jealous POS wrote up those regulations ... if a car is in stock condition and the manufacturer got it passed as being street-legal, there shouldn't be any such regulations deeming it not legal ...
