Post subject:  95 Z28 Project

Well I bought the Z28 from Harley and since there is not a project forum, I figured I would start my thread here...

Started today by just checking it all out and looking at everything, well come to find out the head gasket is blown and some idiot put sealant in the radiator so that is toast, as well as the thermostadt. One high beam headlight is done for, and the back up light switch is out. A few of the guages do not work correctly...

Today I ordered the headlight and the back up light switch as that is all they failed it for, when I get it through inspection, I will replace the head gasket and start working the guage issues. This car is going to be my daily driver, so I will be working on it as I go... First things first though and that is the head gasket... Cant very well drive it like it is... Oil and coolant all mixed up...lol...

Well got into it today, and luckily it was not a head gasket, but just some idiot put quick seal or something in it... It was like sludge in there... Anyway, got it all cleaned out and new coolant put in... Seems to be running fine, except for the idle... TPS is either no good or the wires going to it are no good... Still have to test that. The EGR is toast, but I have a brand new one ready for install... I ordered the reverse switch for it a few minutes ago, however, every where I look for a headlight either says they dont carry them or they are sold out???? How can this be??? Do they go out that much??? It is a high beam drivers side. I can find low beam all day but no high beams???

Can't you pick up a similar/same size headlight? Hela (I think it was) had some the same size as on the Firebird, might be the same as on the early 4th Gen Camaros ... ?!

Yeah they are the same I think, however, I ordered one today from Summit for $33. Went to put the new EGR vavle in today to find that someone had removed the entire system and put a plate on it... Removed the vacuum line and plugged it. So now I need to read up on it and find out what all is missing. I have the vacuum lines and the new EGR valve. but what all else is gone??? Tomorrow I am going to test the new TPS and see why it is not working...

Why are you planning on reinstalling the EGR?

Also, why do you think the TPS is bad? What are the symptoms the car is experiencing?

Check engine light is on, I ran the diagnostics and it came back TPS too low, and EGR fault. The car idles at 2000 RPM, that is what I am trying to fix. When I cleared the codes that came up they came back within 2 seconds...

TPS probably doesn´t need to be replaced, just tuned. If it´s the same as the L98 Throttle bodies which I think it is there isn´t much to it. Check on LS1tech they probably have a tech article on it. You´ll probably have to do the TPS, idle control valve, and the minimum air. There´s a sequence to which order they go in.

As for the EGR trouble code, rather than replace all the missing parts just reflash the computer and turn off the EGR in the ECM. I believe after 93 the ECM´s stopped using chips and just ran computer tunes. So maybe you can do it with a pocket tuner? Something to think about.

so I need to buy a programmer and I can fix the issues? Will that lower the idle too??

Post subject:  Re: 95 Z28 Project

No no, For the Throttle problem I would start by tuning it. Check LS1tech.com for tech articles to see if they tell how to do it. If not and it´s the same as the L98 throttle bodies they have the procedures and the order to do them in on iroczone.com

The programmer was just a suggestion on fixing the check engine light by turning the EGR off in the computer tune. Not encouraging you to buy a programmer just making options for you.

Kenny has it right for the programmer. That is why I was asking if you had a reason to put EGR back in.

He is also correct...93's were the only LT1's with a chip. The rest have to use a programmer and do not have a replaceable chip.

With the TPS...I will have to look into the sequencing of it. There is something, but I just cannot remember it right now. I think you would get much better results by searching camaroz28.com instead of ls1tech.

The TPS is non adjustable on a LT1. But you could elongate the holes for some adjustability.
Wills problem is the reading was out of spec and wouldn't change when the throttle pushed.

While I have been here on my death bed, I have been reading alot....
1: I am going to disengage my skip shift
2: I have to either get a tuner or take it to a shop to have the EGR turned off
3: I have to check the power if any coming into the TPS
Once I get to where I can get out of bed again I will start on these and post up what I can get done without the tuner... Will

1... Check (PCM tune)
2... Check (PCM tune)
3... Checked...

The grey wire(5v constant) reads 0v... blue wire works and so does the ground, checked against MAP sensor...

However, I can not find the short, anyone have any ideas for me, I've checked several inches back from the connector to show the wire is bad and it is not the pigtail...

I am tempted to take it to a shop and pay them too much to fix it...

If you want to make some money by parting it up, instead of spending money to fix it. I'll take the engine off your hands :P
