Any smart people with a dyno graph of a 2010 2L I4 TDI for the Golf or the Jetta?

Anyone have a 2009 or 2010 with the DSG?

Any dislikes?

Hi Roy,
I'm on my 3rd 2.0 liter 170 ps TDI Diesel, all of them with DSG (Passat CC, not Jetta).
I am incredibly surprised how the smooth/quiet the common rail diesel runs, many people don't even notice it's a Diesel (the older pumpe-düse Diesels used to clatter quite a bit). Economy is very good, I typically get over a 1000 Km on a tank of Diesel, my wife does far better.
I tried the DSG and won't go back to stick shift (except for performance cars). The TDI and the DSG are very well matched and it is one of the key factors for such a good fuel (diesel?) economy. The DSG shifts very quick and smooth, only downside is that you can't do burnouts/drag starts because the electronic throttle won't allow it. On the up side, it puts no undue stress on your drivetrain.
So far I have only had one hiccup, a faulty mass flow sensor (the engine suddenly did not want to rev high) which was swapped without problem. It's a "supplier part", so it has no effect on the quality of the engine.
I can recommend the TDI / DSG combination without any reservations.

Hi Stef

I am looking at a 2010 Jetta TDI American Specs. Well I guess I am not looking as it will be here in Mid March.
The only thing that killed me was the reduced engine output for the Amercan Model 140hp as compared to 170hp. The difference must be in the engine controller as from what I read everything else seems to be identical between the two cars. I guess that is because of the serious stringent emission standards the US imposes on passenger car diesels and what the DPF (diesel particulate filter) can sucessfully handled.

Roy, is this car the replacement for the (old) Ford? "Car and Driver" magazine has this car in their current issue.

I'm going to be in the market for a daily car this summer ... Volvo leasing runs out in December ... with 25kkm+ yearly for my daily commute I'll be getting a Diesel again .. running my S60 on 5l/100km on average or 47mpg ... can't complain about that on a 2.5l 5cyl w/ the size and weight of it (and it being 6 years old).
At the moment, I'm thinking about either and Opel Insignia or Volvo C70 ... the VW Roadster would have been nice, but I guess it's still two years or more till they build it ... the TT would also be nice, but Audi is pretty expensive as far as leasing goes, I reckon the depreciation on them is too high ...

Yes it is. I had that Escort new since 92 and it was a great daily driver. That car currently has 270K miles on it . But alas I have to junk it because the frame cracked.

I got the test drive today.
Pros
crazy abundance of torque.
near flawless shifting of the transmission
sport mode on the transmission
almost as quiet as a gasoline
Lots of cabin room for four 6 foot tall adults

cons
runs out of steam around 4500 rpms
tranny will upshift or downshift atomatically in manual mode
All season tires sux
No AWD option
US model has 30HP and 50 lb ft less.
Manual mode is azz backwards - push forward to shift up pull back to shift down.

Overall it seems to be a good car for the price. It would be a awesome car with awd and 170hp .
I can't get over how quiet it is, the abundance of torque available at off idle, and the DSG.
This car is going to make quite a impact in the states. It made an impact on me. I should have mine in 8 weeks.

I knew that you'll be impressed by the quiet diesel and excellent engine / DSG match.
The DSG will allow you to shift in manual mode, but ultimately it will shift when it feels that you have run outside the selected gear's rpm parameter. It's a diesel, they live on torque, you don't have to rev much past 4500 rpm.
I have the paddles on the steering wheel, that is like 10000x more fun snapping through the gears.

I thought paddles were an option/extra?

And about the 30hp and 50lb-ft less than the Euro models, I would think this is a software-only downgrade which could be upgraded quickly (but the warranty... OK...).

how good are the new commonrail diesels with veggie / olive oil ?

Why would the massive output reduction be done ? could it have to do with the different diesel properties compared to europe ?

A engine parts comparo might show if the injectors/ cams / pistons / turbo / interooler , etc would be the same and the output reduction is only ecy related ?

In Europe you have the choice of a 140 bhp or 170 bhp engine.
It's propably only a theme of more boost and bigger injectors.
Jeejee, veggie oil will KILL this motor asap.

Garry, you might want to look at the Volvo C30 unless you need more room. I rented one of them with the diesel and it was a great car. Peppy and excellent fuel mileage.

While the size isn't really that important, I don't like the body style on that car too much ... I guess on that car, it's probably either love it or hate it ... ;)
