Stupid question - just got an inquiry on Bitburg from someone whose friend has his licence suspended, and he complained that a drivers licence is required - he stated a licence is not required for driving on the ring (though I don't know whether he means Hockenheim or Nürburg) - can somebody comment on this? Can't believe anybody is allowed to drive on Nürburgring w/o licence (IIRC the Nordschleife has been changed to "public street" status!?)

Just got a reply - yes, he's talking about Nordschleife ...

Just checked their website ... it states clearly that Nordschleife is operating under StVO and StVZO ... so his friend would definitely be in deep sh@t had they caught him ...

You're right, Garry. Especially with the police checks going on the last weekends he would be in trouble! AFAIK it has the "public street status" since 1927.
Hockenheimring is different, nobody of the officials there really cares about anything, at least that's my impression. I'm talking about noise, drifting in the parking lot etc. However that can also be quite funny sometimes...

It's open to the public (I'm talking about "pay & drive", not about closed events) ONLY on Thursdays from April to October. In winter it's open most Sundays if the weather is OK.
Advantage in summer is that you'll see a lot of interesting cars, advantage in winter is that you might drive 30min sessions instead of 15min for the same price (12 Euro) and that -- sometimes -- you're on the track with only 3 or 4 other cars... or even alone.
Here the schedule:
