Driver or passenger, what is the fastest you have ever been? My fastest is 10.90 in my fathers 79 Camaro. It was a full race car with a 406 small block chevy.

13.601 in this car. In the one we had years ago (in college), the best was a 10.33. That wasn't too bad for a 327 in those days, especially in a ugly 59 Chevy. Looked like crap, but ran like a scalded ape. Lots of fun. Nothing sounds like a 327 at 10,000 rpm. Like a kamakazi bike but louder.

I bet it was. I like listening to Jerry's 'old day talk'. It sucks though, when he says a new GTO could be bought for like $2500 and now it's worth about 100 times that. Those must really have been the days.

Sorry, no pictures. Too many moves. I had some trophies until a few years ago and finally got rid of them too. They were bent up pretty badly after all the moves. That was back when trophies were metal, not plastic. I assure you that it wasn't anything to look at. It was the cheapers version of the 59s, two door post. No air or power anything. Just a wild 327. Mondello ported heads, 12.5 to 1 CR, blueprinted and balanced by Dan Cobb, Hooker Super Comp headers with wheel well exit, dual Carters, and the wildest solid lifter cam we could find. It had a Borg Warner T-10 and a 12 bolt with 5.33 gears and posi. We ran steel wheels with skinnies on the front and Mickey Thompsons on the rear as big as would fit with 5 pound sledge reshaping on the inner fender well. When the headers were capped it ran through a single exhaust which made it sound sick, but it still ran fairly well. We could easily pick up some money street racing with it. We also made a couple of other bets that we always ran until people heard about us. The first one was that we could jump beer cans with the front wheels which was easy with the slicks on. The other bet was to each place a $20 dollar bill under a magnet on the dash (yes, it was all steel). If the other person could get the money off the dash in first or second, they kept it. Never lost on that one. It was a lot of fun to drive. We didn't even have a roll bar or shoulder harness in it. Just a seat belt. We never owned a helmet in those days. The engine ran for 3 years without even having the manifold or heads off. The only problems were exploding the clutch and pressure plate or the gears in the rear end.
As far as cheap cars go, these are some of the ones you could get for less than $4,000.
GTO (loaded)
Camaro/Firebirdwith any engine
Mustang/Cougar with any engine
Olds 442
Buick GS
Fairlane/Cyclone GT390
Chevelle SS396
Dodge/Plymouth Street Hemi or 440 Six Pack
Cobra, either 389 or 427
Impala with 409 or 427 after 1965
To make it even better, you could get premium gas (100 octane or higher) for less than 30 cents a gallon at the expensive stations. In a gas war, I have bought it for as low as 5 cents a gallon. A pair of Mickey Thompsons was less than $50. I can still remember getting upset when I had to pay over $20 for a street tire. Cokes were 10 cents and a 8 track tape was a couple of dollars.
Those were the days; cruising around listening to the likes of Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Righteous Brothers, Supremes, Temptations, Jerry Lee Lewis, and a lot of other greats from the early rock and roll days. There were 4 drag strips within a 3 hour drive and the entry fee was, at most, $10. Life was great. I wish all of you gearheads could have the chance to go back and have one weekend of that kind of fun.

Jerry, do you have any pics from your old muscle car days? I'd be anxious to see what you and your friends looked and dressed like back then (no comments Jason).

You're as fast as a F-16?
I'm gonna doubt that

Have any of y'all ever read the articles in hot rod about drag racing back in the day. I think it would be awesome to have been around when today's legends were just starting out. If you ever get back to the states, the IHRA has some old school classes. Definitely worth checking out.
