I'd imagine the tire already had a defect, or was some el cheapo piece of crap ... it literally tore ... and I reckon those wheel wells aren't built to take that kind of force ...

Actually what happened since it only spun one wheel is that the speed of the tire was doubled . So if the speedo was registering 100 the single tire spinning was doing 200 mph. Tire was probably an hrated or v rated and the safe limits were exceeded resulting in catastrophic results.
