When changing the brake fluid, do you need a scan tool?????

The guy who is doing the change has read some reference about needing a Tech 1 or T-100 (scan tool) to bleed/purge the brake fluid. It is something to do with Traction Control.

It also mentions TCS not ASR. Is there a difference.

Is this right? Do you need the scanner or can the brakes be bled without it?

With traction control, he is probably right. I don't have it, so I don't worry about it.

ASR is different, that is steering. :)

I always thought ASR is Anti Slip Restraint. Besides, mine is a 1999 like yours Jack. I thought traction control was standard??

You are right about asr, but I thought that aided in steering. If I am wrong, sorry.. Traction control is/was an option. :)

ASR, I believe measures the speed of front and rear wheels. If they are not the same the ASR (or PCM) cuts the power abd applies the brakes. Clever stuff eh....

I can see the point about the book refering to the need of a scanner - but surely bleding the brakes can be done without it!!!!!!!

Can anyone help....

Nope , you do not need a scanner to bleed the brakes on a fbody with traction control(ASR). Just make sure before you do bleed it ,that the ABS was not activated prior to Bleeding. I've probably bled about 4 gals of ATE Super BLUE through my system over the years . Never had a problem.

Thanks Roy, much appreciated.

Just for clarity - how do you know the ASR was not activated before bleeding - do you mean switch it off at the switch.

For ABS you will get the ABSlight and possibly the low traction light if activated. For ASR you will get the low traction light if it is on and there is a difference in wheel speeds.

Yes I have seen those lights several times (oops), but what do you mean about ASR not activated prior to bleeding?

It was The ABS Iwas talking about. Make sure the ABS was'nt invoked prior to turning the car off. If it was just restart the car and move it around the block, shut it off and bleed the brakes.
