I've been reading some posts on other boards about stall converters. Stupid question - what do they do? What's the results of different RPM ratings?

Look on my links page and go to manufacturers.
Yank, Neal and Precision Industries have pretty good info pages that will explain the specifics about the TCs.
But, in a nutshell they increase torque multiplication, cut down driveline power loss by being more efficient, put your car into a more beneficial RPM range, reduce rotational mass and make your car go really fast!!! This all depends on which converter you get and how it is made (options ie Torque Ratio). That's the down and dirty, but there is much more to them...look at the pages I mentioned and the world will unfold before your very eyes...

When are you going auto? You could spray NOS and be in the 10's.

Quote: Germans and automatics don't go hand-in-hand, right Garry?!! :p
I guess automatic is as popular here in Germany as manual is in the States ... might be a cost factor ... I can drive either I guess ...

Depends on your point of view Jack...I had a A4 in my Formula and have a M6 in the WS6...each have their advantages / disadvantages!!!
An A4 with a converter is hard to beat from a dead stop!!!

Quote: To me, it really takes the fun out of driving to have an auto., especially in a sports car....
I just think it's funny when I come across people who have a driver's licence but say they can only drive X or Y ... oh well ... I guess if all you've ever driven is an automatic, driving a manual is pretty hard at first ... but the other way around ...
Best joke was the husband of a friend of my mother ... he wasn't that young when he got his licence ... anyway, he can "only drive a VW" ... best situation was when somebody totalled his Jetta or whatever he was driving at the time ... they had the choice between a three year old japanese fully loaded and a pretty bare 6-8 year old VW Santana or so ... (they don't have too much money, either, so the choices were pretty limited) They picked the stupid VW, even though it's lot higher in taxes and has worse gas mileage ... am I glad I didn't get a VW-only licence ...

I know, I don't know how someone could not be able to drive an automatic. I mean, come on people, it's idiot-proof!! :p

... at least after about a day of getting used to NOT pressing the clutch when slowing down everybody should be able to drive automatic ... oh well ... I got the feeling many (or most?) german drivers stopped learning to drive after getting their licence ...

I've driven both automatic and manual from the day I got my license and so far I've had no problem "switching" between them. However, I didn't want my Z28 to be an A4, in that car I wouldn't be happy with anything but an M6.

How about a manual valve body manualy shifted with a B&M Hammer with a 9.5 vigalante converter? (3000 stall lock up) Try to outshift it when done right?

Vigilante TCs for the LS1s are not as good as the Yank converters. Do a quick search on LS1.com and you'll see that people are having much better results with Yank.
