The situation is on the firebird my parents are going to give me the rear sway bar is broke in half(how I dont know) and while it was running they drove it around like that for awhile before my dad killed it. My question is do I need to put a new one on before I do any driving or would be posible to maybe drive it only a little until I get a new one and put it on? The main reason I ask is before it will even move I will have to buy a new tranny(due to large peices of bellhousing missing), possibly a new engine, drive shaft, rearend so price is the only thing holding me back at the moment

sounds like someone learned what happens when you shatter a flywheel. Hope no one lost any feet! Not all vehicles have a rear swaybar from the factory. No, it will not handle as well without one, but I would not think it unsafe as long as you are aware and careful with it. But shoot, if you're shellin out the money for a new trans or bellhousing, cough up another few hundred and put one on.
Or you could always duct tape the old one together.

I am not sure exactly how much damage was done to it cause my dad said he was driving along when it just quit going so a brief look at it I saw the bellhousing was missing several large chunks

T-bone,
For a 1979 F-body you can drive it all day long without a rear or front sway bar and it will be just fine. Most of the second gen F-bodies didn't come with a rear sway bar. Just take it off and hunt one down out of a local bone yard($5 or $10). My 73 firebird didn't have one and still doesn't and it still will out handle most 2nd Gens. Concentrate on the tranny first.

Thanks for the info hope to someday put one on but since it is not necessary I will be concentrating on the tranny and any other potential damages that were done

well I hate to say it but I am going to pass up getting the fbody for a while but the reason is that my wifes parents are in a tight financial situation( they are both 62) and they need to get rid of a car to help cut down on bills so they are giving me one of their cars free but we are going to be giving them a couple of grand to help out so I guess I am buying it in a way oh yeah the car that I am buying is a 1977 malibu classic 4door hardtop also the speedometer like floats back and forth while driving any ideas on a fix?
