Hi,
as I recon I can't go another year with my tires, I was wondering which ones you'd recommend ... I am currently running 235/40/R17 in front and 255/40/R17 in the rear, at least the rear ones nearing slicks state
Tried to find some tire tests, but the largest ones tested I found were 225/45 R17 ...
Any ideas as to make, model and prices?

Are you asking how long is a piece of string?
Performance tires and "cheap" prices don't go hand in hand. If you want to win races then there is only one tire: Michelin Pilot Sport II
For very "spirited" driving there is one "sport" tire that delivers good handling, is semi-affordable and last more than 2 weeks: Conti SportContact
Otherwise, just slap on a set of TOYO's (or whatever) and get on with your life.

You know my car - not enough power for serious contests, so they should be tires for decent road handling both wet and dry (the latter being preferred ) Would be nice to get 20k out of them
Conti sport was one of the test winners I found, together with Goodyear Eagle F1 ...
(did I say cheap anywhere?)

your question to "make model and prices" suggests you were looking for some "not too expensive"
The best tires are just good enough!
more than once I have been in situations where the reaction in combination with the handling of the car (which includes good tires) avoided an accident.

Roy, that is a VERY sticky tire (this is the stock tire on BMW M3 CSLs) but from what I've heard from drivers running this tire it'll wear VERY quickly... and it's the total opposite of cheap... But I'd be interested how your car handles with it compared to the Nittos.
EDIT:
Just looked up the prices e.g. in Garry's size 255/40R17: $244.

Roy,
I wrote a long reply, but this F***ing server seem to lose your reply if you write for more than a few minutes, so here is the short reply:
The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup is a race spec tire, good for Auto-X and Track. Lifespan is about 2000 - 3000 km (same league as Hoosier Victoracer etc).
The Michelin Pilot Sport II is the better choice as a road tire for general use. I get about 6000 - 7000 km on mine (including track days and 8min 30 sec Nürburgring laps).
