Hi all

I drive a 98 Camaro Z28.

For a GM 7.5'' stock rear end with stock Limited Slip POSI I need:

- Shim Kit
- Spacers

- Springs for POSI

I have replaced all rear axle bearings, replaced all differential bearings using a differential overhaul kit and now I found that to both sides of the differential you have a combination of one spacer and a shim for fine-tuning the distance to the differential and they are broken.

I also found that one of the springs has broken in my POSI.

Does anybody have that stuff ?

Best

Pedro

The factory posi is non rebuildable . So if you want a spring from one you basically have to find another factory posi.
The shim kit can e purchased either thru the dealership or thru a parts house like Summit.
Good luck

Hi Roy

Since I am still on holidays I surfed the net for some more information.

Looks like 98-99 Camaros had an Auburn POSI and then 99+ they had a Torsen differential.

I just sent an info request to auburngear.com, because they offer spring retainer service kits for 7.5 10bolt GM rear ends which you can get via JEGS.com for example for around 100$ (actually this info was hard to find over the net somehow .. check it out if this is feasible .. i am wondering if this is what I need).

http://www.jegs.com/p/Auburn+Gear/758413/10002/-1

Let's see what Auburn says...

Concerning the shims, from the GM parts manual for the Camaro that I have it looks like you have a combination of a spacer and appropriate shim.

Could any of you check if this would be the shim kit 7.5 I need ?
http://www.go-fast-parts.com/5732644.html

pinion depth shims, adjustable side (carrier) shims ... are those the ones ?

Thanks for your help

Pedro

p.s.: ... in fact at first I only noticed that metallic noise in the rear that could only be the wheel bearings and when we replaced them we also noticed that the shims were in place but broken in three ... grmpf .. snif .. in addition one of the springs in the POSI was broken .... argh ...

... must see that i put some money aside for the real thing MOSER M9 .. ;-)

You may want to disassemble the differential further to see if there is any more damage.
As far as Ican tell, the spring kit from jegs is for the Auburn Pro.
As for the shim kit it would seem to work. But if you look at the picture then you would see that it is for a ford nine inch. Probably a picture error.

hi there

the spring issue is probably solved now, since a fellow f-body owner is moving to a Moser, so he can spare some springs from his stock POSI, which is ok ..
(i would also love to go for a Moser sooner or later)
auburn gear did not answer yet .. however if i am lucky i will not need them

concerning shims, my Canadian friends in Vancouver are sending me some .. and btw .. i did not need shims for pinion and ring but carrier shims .. aerr .. differential bearing shims and spacer with which you adjust the whole POSI along the axle.

i'll keep you posted.

best
pedro

Hi guys

just a short update for you .. it may help all 98 Camaro/Firebird guys .. just received an email from Auburn Gear on my question:

---------------------
Question:

I drive a 1998 Chevy Camaro Z28 in Germany

VIN 2G1FP22G5W2147815

I think the 98-99 Camaros had an Auburn differential. Now one of the springs has broken and I think I would need a spring retainer service kit for my stock GM rear end.

Could you tell me which of them I need ?
109-541016 or 109-541017 ?

Best regards
Pedro
------------------------------
Answer:

Actually, either of them will work for you. The 541017 is a stronger spring kit so you may want to consider that.

Thanks for your inquiry.

-------------------------------

You find those Auburn kits for example at www.jegs.com

Best
Pedro

ok, here is "the rest of the story" ..

The Auburn 541017 is in fact a spring retainer kit with three large (redblack) and two small springs (yellow) and they fit the stock diff of my 98 Camaro.

However in the end I got myself an Auburn Pro Series diff from Ring and Pinion in Everett, WA (btw check out Tate Hudson there, great service, fast delivery, 2 days later UPS showed up with the Diff).

http://www.ringpinion.com/Default.aspx

Whoever owned this car before stuck his own self-made shims in, which means, we simply did not know anymore which the original distances were.
This also meant that you would have to have gauges to measure in your differential along the cam shaft axis and the axle axis, which we did not have.
So the best (unfortunately not as economic) solution found was to get the car to the Opel/GM workshop in Frankfurt and have them do the job.
Fortunately I also had a ring and pinion which fit the new differential, so in the end all was replaced: all bearings / shims / diff / ring and pinion and the whole thing was measured in anew.

Pricetag: EUR 800 for work and measuring that stuff in. USD 470 (diff) + USD 200 (UPS 2 day shipping) + EUR130 (customs) => ALL: EUR 1500 more or less

However, I ended up with a new rear, which feels quite good now.

BTW I also upgraded the air intake. Already had a FTRA Kit and now I stuck in the Fast Toys Air Lid and an SLP 85 MAF as well as the SLP smooth bellows. I also moved to the Hypertech 160 Thermostat and all together you notice a considerable power and traction gain.

So I guess the standard tuning mods are done now, and I can start putting cash aside for the more serious upgrades ... :-)

Best
Pedro

OK, I hope they did it right. I've heard nothing but bad stories about this place...
