Waves can move from a long distance from a big storm.

That ship was taking on water on the right front. Therre are several stories about it. Check out Rough Waves, there is a tanker video of the ribbing in the tanker flexing like crazy.

Well, let's say I have my reasons not to go on a safari cruise for diving, even if the prospect of seeing really great, big underwater life is tempting ... ;) I can get through a day trip, but ending up on a boat for a week, possibly with high waves, would be a very bad holiday ... especially as one can't stay submerged all the time ...
