Man..........stumped for words at the moment collecting my thoughts. Brand new 10/30w oil and hoped it would cure my erractic oil pressure after warm up and it didn't. So I changed to 20/50 and everything looked good and I could tell a immediate difference in the readings at initial startup (thinking to myself ok a heavier weight then)...but after 10 mns it starts fluctuating again. Now w/ the 10/30 dino oil it would jump 15 psi either direction but never drop under 20psi @ idle....w/ the 20/50 it only jump 5-10 psi either direction and never drop under 40 psi @ idle.

So my question for today is how accurate is the mech guage? I mean I know it's accurate but has anyone run one on perfect sound engine and still see fluctuation in oil pressure no matter how big or small?

I planned on putting new bearings in this spring but I just wanted to be sure before doing it. Thanks!

PS.. WHAT THE HELL IS THE CAUSE OF VOLTS DROPPING UNDER SLIGHT LOAD AND THEN SHOOTING BACK UP 10 12.5 TO 13v?! I''ve cleaned all the contacts ground and positive w/ no luck! ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!

John,
did you have that crank turned ......ever??? My 455 at home did the same thing and that had 10/10 bearings. Oil pressure never dropped below 20psi but all that I have talked to say it's due to the different bearing size. Did you have any metal shavings???? Got me on the voltage thing.

John , I would check out that pump. Sounds like it could be loose , or the pickup is too high , or the there is a problem with the relief spring.

As for the alternator, 12.5-13 vdc is not enough voltage too charge a battery at idle. Do you have a under drive pulley on the crank and the alternator. Does the voltage jump up to 13.5-14 vdc at a higer idle , lets say 2500 rpms?

Val the crank was repolised and I use standard bearing when it was rebuilt.
Metal shavings? Oh yeah......I chips all in the filter from the 1st layer of the bearings it appears. I haven't cut this filter open yet as it's still new but I flushed the engine w/ at least 50 qts of oil to make sure I got it all from inside the pan as I had a few normal deposits on the drain plug and one 1/2" sliver on there as well. :( Why the damage so early on is any ones guess. I over shot the rpm's once in a missed shift but I don't ever hear anyone else mention oil problems from something like that.

Rebuild is all I can come up with....it would be nice if it was the pump or the relief spring. Too make sure though I'll be buying a new pump along w/ a custom oil pan as this has nothing in it at all.

The volt thing........I'm clueless on. Not under crank pulleys. My pwr steering pump isn't making noise's either so I don't know where to go. Should've bought a volt meter like I was supposed when I was stateside but didn't.

To answer you other question Roy it looks like it goes higher past 2500 it's above the middle mark.

Roy you have a meter?

Man that sucks! I swear I love this car...I really do but when it does down it goes down hard w/ a bang! I've got a spare but it's only a 105a you'll kill that sucker in no time. See mine don't cut off it'll run but it just runs like crap in the 2500rpm range and after that it's ok.

We can drop em' off a cliff together if you like.
