Got a call from somebody who has a V6 "KITT" car in his shop ... it had some major engine problems, which was why the engine was pulled and sent off for a rebuild (IMHO, from what I was told, it would have been smarter and cheaper to get a new V8 and drop it in...). Anyway, after the repairs, the engine came back in, and ran, albeit with some power issues, for half a day. After that, it could be started for one more time, and hasn't run anymore ever since ... they have removed most everything that is not essential (like MAF etc.), but still can't get it to fire up. During starting, it's supposed to sound as it it's almost starting to run, but dies again. They have already checked for ignition spark, and fuel, and both seem to be fine ...
Any ideas what could be the culprit here, or what should/could be checked?

IIRC, I think they already checked valve movement compared to TDC ... also, why would it run (more or less successfully) for half a day after putting the motor on? If either timing was off, it shouldn't have started then (unless something broke afterwards). Oh, I think they mentioned it ran rather rich from the smell of the exhaust, which could have been caused by the MAF ...

Things happen . But what really needs to happen is somebody that is good at trouble shooting take a look. So for the most part Euro mechanics working on american iron are usually , remove and replace type folks. Most lack the knowledge and technical equipment for American iron. Sad but true
On another subject Does it still have a cat on? A plugged cat can cause it also.

Given that it needs to be street-legal for German registration, I would imagine it still has cats ...

Guess I'll suggest they pull the exhaust and see if it runs ... guess as they already took off all the other non-essentials, this should also help with sound

Was anything done tuning wise? How do the plugs look? How does the oil look? It is possible that the cylinders are washed with fuel and caused an oiling issue or fouled plugs.

From what I believe to remember, there was no tuning improvements done to the motor ...

Is it the original MAF? When mine was a V6, I had to replace the MAF a few times (rebuilt pieces). Have they checked the coil?

don't these engines have a pretty good limp home mode ? eg if you unplug certain sensors the ecu uses a default setting. I know for instance my bmw engine, if i unplug my maf / lambda etc. it runs just as good, but uses preset values. thats an easy way to check certain sensors..
can't you do a obd2 readout ? weather ot not it gets a decent crank signal etc ?
when swapping engines (at least my persone experience), very often for some strange reason the crank sensor tends to give problems, even when it was working just fine before, i have had that on at least 2-3 occasions

FYI, the car will run without the MAF. Under normal operations the MAF performs the air metering and uses the O2 sensors in closed loop for a sanity check. Without the MAF, it will revert back to the O2 sensors. Without the O2 sensors, it will also run, in open loop mode, and will most likely be really rich, around 12 on the AFR. I think only the crank and cam position sensors will keep it from running, with exception of course the fuel and ignition. Do a compression check!
