Hi folks,

The manual of my 2000 V6 Camaro states that oil changes have to be done every 15,000 km ( 9,375 miles).

The "change-oil-light" however comes on aprox. every 8,000 km (5,000 miles). I don´t drive in an extraordinary environment, my trips are usually between 25 and 100 km long and, yes, I do frequently drive above 160 kph (100mph). However, I do not abuse the car: The fuel consumption averages at 11.8 ltrs / 100 km (20 mpg).

Question: Can I stick with the 15,000 km intervals as stated in the manual or do I have to observe the "change-oil-light"? Does synthetic oil improve the situation?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Cheers

I'd say it depends on the oil (quality) that you're using and how often you have to add oil.

I'm using Mobil 1 0W40 full synthetic and usually change between 13000 and 15000km, no matter when the change light comes on. However as I'm often on the track quite an amount of the "old" oil isn't really 15000km old... I have to add from time to time.

Anyway a modern full synthetic should be good for 15000km.

Ben

I change the oil at 10.000k latest (more like 8000), also on the 3.8 i work on sometimes. IMO extending the intervals just to save some money and time is not worth it, especially because we use the cars on the autobahn at constant high rpms and they were not built for this. And i also just use synthetics, but a higher quality oil collects the same amount of blowby gases, dirt and whatever like a cheap one does (ok, it can probably handle it better, but nevertheless. In a pushrod engine oil seems to get dirty faster). My 3.4 has 173.000ks on it and is still going "strong" (not powerwise, but you know what i mean )...

I change the oil once a year, that's about every 7.000 km. It doesn't "flicker" by then! If I don't reset the oil-change light, the light will start to flicker after about 2.000 km, with new oil!
In my opinion, forget this stupid oil-change light! It's not possible to tell oil quality reliable with this software crab anyway!

the "change Oil" indicator calculates the intervall by engine running-time average speed and coolant temperature not by quality!
