Last night, police confiscated 22 cars around Darmstadt for illegal racing on A5 ... 3 cars were running beyond 240km/h, some passing cars on the right and on the emergency lane ... 5 cars were modded beyond what's allowed (this being Germany, doesn't have to be much), others were modded but had the mods listed in the car papers. Some cars supposedly had mods for 100k on them ...
Hope there weren't any FBE folks involved ...

well, the 5 cars that are deemed not streetworthy due to heavy modding will most likely end up being a Fiat or something ...

Yes they are considered to be not legal.
So they can not return them to the previous owner, nor sell them.
After being used as evidence they will be disposed off.

Dunno about what what will happen - the last paragraph is something like:
Quote: The vehicles, if any technical modifications are found to have been done, that are not permitted or checked and registered in the car papers, will be removed from public traffic
Not sure if the owners have the possibility of somehow getting them back provided they have them changed back or the mods legally registered ...

No, they will just take away their plates, give them some points on their license and they have to pay a big fine...
If they de-mod their cars they will be able to re-register, i think.
If they catch you too often you simply excide your point limit of the license (and the limit of your wallet)...
edit: But because they used the emergency lane and were speeding like that they lost their driving license anyway already

Know of two cars caught with illegal mods they got disposed of,
and the owners billed for disposal cost.
About 10 years back, though.

Look on the bright side guys, most of these cars could have been riced up hatches. Anyone know?
Cry when it's an American car.
I'm not for confiscating cars per se but I think that where there has been a conviction for reckless or dangerous driving then this is not too harsh a sanction. Some people shouldn't be on the roads and 'm not just talking about high speed...I don't have a problem with that...just blind stupidity that puts others at serious risk.
Now where's my Heinkel LS1 bubble car?

Maybe you are talking about some old 100 DM cars... But at least I know that this is no longer true today. Imho this would cause a conflict with our jurisdiction anyway. The car is the owners property, illegal or not.
It is also no longer true that a car loses its operation permisson (Betriebserlaubnis?) if there is a part found on it that is illegal, like it was some time ago. Now there have to be SEVERAL illegal parts to make the whole car illegal.
I wonder if the A5 between Darmstadt and Frankfurt has a speed limit? Isn't that the 4-lanes-in-one-direction-autobahn without a limit??

There are 100 and 120 limits partly - some parts of it are 2- and 3-lane w/o speed limit ...

Really? But I remember driving once on an unlimited 4-lane-bahn and I think it was the A5. And that was north of Darmstadt...

Oops - moment - Darmstadt Northbound is 4lane ... confusing it with the piece towards/from Tony at Mannheim ... yes, up to the Frankfurt Airport area, there weren't any speed limits I can remember ATM ...

OK, so if they were running 240 km/h that was legal (on the news report it looked like going that fast was a major fault of them, typical ). Passing on the right and the other stuff was not right, of course...
