Hi folks,
can somebody please provide some photos of the headlight backside (maybe you Garry?).
I am working in headlight design business and I am interested in modifying existing headlight units (you know these glowing rings in the new BMW 5series headlight?).
As I have read, the Camaro headlights have automatical load levelling, ie. no switch on the dash board for levelling.
When levelling, is the whole headlight unit including cover lens moving or only the reflector inside?
Cheers,
Gunnar

There are some already ... http://uscco.insider.org/de/pictool.html?WHICH=g&IMG=17http://uscco.insider.org/de/pictool.html?WHICH=g&IMG=18I don't know if they are detailed enough to help you out ... Anyway, I have the 3.8l european Camaro, and it has headlight adjustment through a little dial ... IIRC, automatic headlight adjustment might only be available on the Firebird ... not sure about that, though ... Looking at the pic I took, I'd say only the inside moves ... the rest of the light casing is pretty solid, so ...

Thanks Garry,
the top view of the headlight shows, that reflector and cover lens are a sealed unit, which are suspended on three ball joints (well only one is visible with the levelling motor behind and the small white gear for manual adjustment on the assembly line).
This design is called frame type headlight, because the reflector/lens assembly is mounted to a frame. The disadvantage of this design is a not uniform gap size around the cover lens.
In gap size cautious Europe (Piechs revenge!) most headlights are of housing type, where the cover lens is fixed to a housing and only inside the reflector is adjustable.

Keep us posted on that project of yours. Some BMW type light would be cool I think.

Hi folks,
buying a new car can be a nightmare, when you have so many contradictory requirements:
Lots of power
Low insurance
Low second hand price
Reliability
Cool looks
Clear headlight cover lens
Relatively big trunk (well I haven't seen one live yet, I only know its 365l). Any fotos available??
Fortunately the Camaro Z28 fits perfectly to these requirements.
The clear headlight cover lens is a MUST when I want to modify the headlights. My current car has custom built headlights and I want to do the same with the Camaro.
But still I haven't bought the car and modifying the headlights will consume the whole winter time.
So maybe next spring I can tell you more,...sorry!
Lets close this chapter for now!
Cheers!
Gunnar

If you don't fold down the back seats and use only the place as trunk where the T-Tops are stored (if you have a T-Top car) then the trunk is *smaller* than 365 liters, really...
However, it was big enough to swallow the baggage of me and two girls during a 10-day-trip and you know girls take lots of things with them.
But we also used the place right behind the back seats and not only the "real" trunk (it's even smaller if you have T-Tops and the 'holders' for them are there).
I think there are pictures of the Camaro trunk on Andreas' Site:

Maybe you also get an idea when you look at my pics:

I know its a shame that after almost three years the project headlamp mod is not yet finished. But I spent too much time in China for my company (again another three month from Feb to April) and building a new home for my Z28 with a small workshop.
Most of the headlamp components are actually completed: the illuminated rings by BMW, the levelling system, the compulsary headlight cleaning system, the 4-beam mod and the nice bezels around the Hella high and low beam modules. For better aerodynamics I bought some GTS clear headlight covers which I need to fit to my bezels. I am really keen to finish this year, but right now my garage is unpleasantly cold and I am not really motivated to work on the car.
Definetely I will boast with my mod when it will be finished

Sounds like some pretty decent work you've already done there!! If you ever get it done and get it through TÃœV, let me know ...

I have copied some pics of the headlamp mod concept here:
http://www.geocities.com/gunnar_lindner ... oncept.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/gunnar_lindner ... _front.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/gunnar_lindner ... nlicht.doc
The idea is simple: take Hella aftermarket modules for low beam (Xenon) and high beam, mount them on a carrier frame made of aluminium profiles and put a nice bezel around those modules.
As I am not proficient in making any free form parts out of glasfiber reinforced plastic or carbon fibre, the Hella sample shop sold the bezel as a laser sinter part, setting me back 1200EUR! You will pay about the same again for the Hella low beam and high beam modules.
So selling and making profit is not an issue. Sorry, but this will be a one of a kind headlamp. To make things really complicated I wanted these BMW illuminated rings, not with the 10W bulb but with a xenon D2S burner. The are MUCH brighter than on the BMWs.
To improve aerodynamics I purchased GTS headlight covers, which need a protective clear coat for scratch resistance. To make them fit to my bezel (designed in 3D software CATIA V4) is the last challenge.
Its a pity I had no 3D data of the Camaro body (cross member, bumper, hood, wing etc). This would have made things much easier.
I am sure I will never try to do this again. It has gone over the top.
But I like it...

Gunnar, try and seel them to a company like APC. Maybe they'll buy the design or something.
