 Post subject: Trip computer resets itself

Can somebody help me out?
Everytime I switch off ignition the trip computer (I think its called this way, you know that device counting the miles you have done inbetween pit stops) resets itself to Zero.

This has happened since I have reset the oil change message with the same button.

Any idea?

AFAIK it has to do with your gauge cluster, there was a TSB on that... Some people fixed it by replacing the battery. If that doesn't help replacing your gauge cluster helps -- I wouldn't do that however...

What is TSB? Rückruf?
Are you talking about the main battery?
I had just replaced mine.

Yes, a TSB is a "technical service bulletin", I think it isn't as important as a Rückruf.

Here's the TSB:

Trip Odometer Resets to Zero (Exchange/Install Instrument Cluster) #99-08-49-009

Some customers may comment that the trip odometer resets to zero when starting the engine.

Cause
Ambient temperatures below 0° C (32° F), combined with low battery voltage, may cause the trip odometer memory to be erased when starting the vehicle.

Correction
To identify the instrument panel cluster part number, use the following procedure:

Install Tech 2 and from the main menu screen select F0: Diagnostics, press enter:
Select 1999, press enter.
Select Passenger Car, press enter.
Select F1: Body, press enter.
Select F, press enter.
Select the Proper nameplate, press enter.
Select the Engine, press enter.
Select F1: Instrument Panel Cluster, press enter.
Select F1: Data Display, press enter.
Select F0: Module Info. press enter.
The Tech 2 will now display the instrument panel cluster part number. If the part number is shown in the table below as the old part number, install a new part number exchange cluster which has had the new circuit board with the non-volatile memory chip installed. Order the cluster from your A/C Delco® Service Center. DO NOT ORDER A CLUSTER FROM GMSPO.

Oh, I see! The reason for the failure may be low temperature. We already knew that this summer sucks :lol:

So, this is only the procedure to read out the part number of the instrument panel cluster!
Afterwards I would have to buy a new cluster with a powerindependent memory. No thanx! The trip odometer is not THAT important.

To bring this thread back from the dead:

Now I also have this problem. Trip resets and the tach and speedo go to max and fall back to 0 after I start the car. This is especially strange as I've just replaced the battery...

Or maybe I've got "something" that drains power even with ignition off...?

I suppose you don't have any means to read the PCM trouble codes?

No. I will start to measure the battery's voltage every day to see if it really loses power when the car sits for a week or so... Maybe it's related to that... it must be, somehow. I do not have this problem when there's e.g. only ONE day between starting of the car.

Guess you could try measuring the power usage while not having anything turned on ... don't know any exact amps, but it should be rather low ... also, as you said, measuring the voltage before starting should help some (guess the dash voltage indicator should give you a general idea what state the battery is in ...)
