As it is somewhat quiet here lately i though i post a mod i did since last week.
Previous weekend i was bitburg 1on1 event.

As i had a different car then before, from the autoX i got blisters on my hand from the heavy steering ( non assisted with short motorsport gearing)
This really took a huge part of the fun from diving spirited.

Some of the newer cars have elecric power steering, so you don't need an extra pump, oil lines, cooler, and a leaky steeringbox.

i got one from an opel corsa , and installed it in my car (not f-body, sorry) here are some pictures.

this is a comparo between the stock and the new electric one.

a lot of extra work goes into all the tiny things that would not be needed on a track only car :-/

steeringlock was at wrong angle

plastic dash trim

a huge part of the install time went into the electrics and schematics and figuring out what wire need what kind of signal, as it normally is speed sensitive.

But i got it all working now, and is quite a difference :ok:

this might be something for other car allso, it costs no power when you don't steer...

That's awesome Joeri! A couple people have mentioned trying to retrofit an electrical unit into some of our old American muscle cars.

How hard are these units to find and are they really expensive? I might like to take one or two back to the states with me to try and put into a Barracuda road race car I'm planning...

Rob, I guess it is not that hard finding one.
It came on opel corsa B and is called opel corsa eps
Propably on many german wrecking yerds you should not have a problem finding one.
these allso came on opel corsa C's but are a bit different, (smaller) and more refined, but should be allso easy to implement i think.

this is a good price for a complete "kit" i think.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3D1&_rdc=1

you could allso find some on german ebay i guess, but i have had nothing but bad experiences with germans + ebay, and would not recommand doing business with them esp. being a non germand like you and me :?

wrecking yard pricing should be something like 150-250 euro (but be sure to get the ECU and all connectors !)

unfortunately i don't have a direct link to any more, as i would like 2 more myself

So this effectively gets rid of the steering rack and mounts an electric motor to the steering column?

What does the ECU provide for it?

I can't tell by the pics....did you have to cut/weld the steering shaft or is it just a replacement?

That is exactly what I was thinking.

The ecu is what provides the electric motor on the steering colum with the right voltage / amps to give the appropriate amount of "help"

it is attached to the top of the eps motor which has sort of and torque sensing device to know how much and what direction it needs to assist.

i must say i begin to like it more and more.
there is quite a bit of "steering feel" gone, i must admit, so it is less communicative then a non assisted steering, but not different to a hydraulic one i guess.

But now i like to drive the car in and around town 100% more
even when driving to the supermarket to get some beer, i normally allways took my girlfriends car, now i take my own car.

The ebay "kit" allso has an adjustable power box with a knob, which lets you adjust the amount of power from 0% to 100%
Although when set at 0% you prob. will loose some "feeling" as the steeringwheel movement is still dampened by the electric motor to some extend.
But then again, it's the best of both worlds i guess..
