I was asked by the mechanic if I wouldn't want to replace the original LSD on my car by something more suited for the increased torque from motor and rear end ... So, anybody got any comment on the necessity and what to get? I read a bit on the web, ls1tech has some positive comments on the TrueTrac ...

That or the T2R if you have the original rear end. Might be better off to just wait until it breaks and then replace the whole thing.

question is whether the stock diff can take the additional torque, or whether it'll turn into a one-wheel-wonder at launch ...

Tru tracs are nice pieces. The stock pieces arent bad either. The posi units arent necessarily the weak point in the rears anyways. If you arent drag racing, you shouldnt have much problems. Heck even drag racing, I know a guy over here thats run 11.4 on a stock rear and stock suspension. Although thats an exception, not the rule. The problem with the stock rears is by the time you spend the $$ to make them pretty tough, you're pretty close to the price of a 12 bolt or S60.

So you'd say I could probably just leave the stock in and save the $400 or so for when I actually need something stronger?

I don't think there's a danger when the diff "breaks", it just won't work anymore but the car's still moving... That means: I'd wait until it breaks.

What I mean is, theres other stuff that'll break before the diff, and cause worse damage. Axles breaking is the #1 for causing catastrophic damage. The housing itself is weak. Under severe load, it wants to push the carrier out of the housing. The girdle rearend cover helps for this, but only so much. The gears themselves are weaker, just from being small. The pinion gear shaft is weak, again from being small. So, by the time you put good axles, a HD carrier, good gears, and all new bearings, you're damn near at the price of a S60 or 12 bolt.

I'd recommend driving it until something breaks. At the worst, you will break an axle, but the brake caliper will keep the wheel from coming off. As long as you are on street tires, it may last a while. I'd definitely not spend the money on beefing it up, other than one of the TA rear covers. When it breaks, you can put a stronger rear end.

The stock diff is strong enough. I'd wait till it breaks or you up the horsepower again.

It's not strong enough for long. I've already been through one. But replacing it is just a stopgap measure. The whole rearend is weak.

That's just a TrueTrac ... and I think it's easier for you to get ...
