Hi all
I'm noticing a small drop on oil. This worries me as IMO i should be drinking oil as I am not thrashing the engine.
What does anyone think? What have you read? Is there a problem with LS1 and oil levels?

The Ls1 is the worst engine I know of for dil consumption.
You could ceck
The vent line from the valve cover to manifold for oil
pcv valve to manifold for oli
or pull the throttle body and do a wipe of the inside .
If you do alot of engine braking, that increases the engine vacuum which pulls oil pass the intake valve seals.

Indeed... the LS1 consumes oil like crazy for some reason. Where it goes? I have no clue. I just know that when I change mine every 3k miles it's down about 1/2-3/4 of a qt. Nothing to be concerned about... just the nature of our beasts.

A HSV is my new wheels - its an Auusi supersaloon. But it uses the same LS1 - with all the smog restricting stuff removed so its punching 343HP and 360lb ft torque.
Have a look in the picture posting forum and "my new wheels" half way down the page, there are a lot on links lower down the thread.
What do you think?

Grocery getter - please I'm a professional taxi driver. Next fair please mate.
Well I've done 5k miles snice that last oil change. It's dropped a teeny bit, nothing to worry about. But the colour has changed, time for a chnage.

I remember reading that the LS1 actually has a recall on some engines. Some do really well on oil, and others just drink oil like a private returning from the field that tries to drink all the alcohol in the city in one night. Anyways, mine is one of the ones that like oil. I change my oil about every 2000 miles and I use Mobil 1 10W-30 Synthetic, and I usually have to add an entire quart before my next oil change. I check all the time for oil leaks... cause I thought there is no way my engine could use that much oil... but time and time again... its the same process... and my engine always checks out fine at the shop.

I always put 6 quarts in when I change my oil. So then what you are saying is I should use five 10W-30 and one 15W-50? Ok. Should I do this every oil change?

On another board, they recommended against mixing oils with different numbers ... but then, that was for 2l 4cyl Toyota engines

Hey Roy,
Would like to me to take a sponge and some soapy water to your car? Would gladly do so. Just let me know.

From what I been hearing. LT1's have a little leak coming from the back of the manifold (by windshield wipers) that is suppose to be normal because of the small thin gasket versus the compression . LS1's might be the same?!?!?!? As for oils I dont think synthetic is the way to go. We normally drive with the RPM around 1500-2500. Synthetic is usless to us V-8 boyz and gurlz. Stay with regular oil because we dont have high revving machines. By the way the difference between the oils id that synthetic soaks in the heads versus lubrication. So, by the time you drag race a few time your oils levels will decrease and so will the viscosity of your oil which equals no protection for your motor. ... I spun my cranck bearing a while back!! also look at you oil containers, the later the alphabet code the newer the oil/production. i.e. SG/SE/SJ

Keep in mind that some engine builders recommend that only synthetic oil be used in their engines. Callaway would not honor his warranties if anything other than Mobile 1 was used. This was a while back so I don't know if is still like that. BTW, I found this out from talking to him back in '97. He has a shop in Leingarten, near Heilbronn. He is usally there around the time of year that Lemans is going on. (He races there.)
