AC Compressor
The funny tapping that I have thought for some time might be a dodgy hydraulic tappet but then the main dealer said there was no fault found, well I listened to various parts of the engine and am almost convinced it's coming from the ac compressor but haven't found the time to take it off.
Firstly, as a matter of theory, if the compressor is seized, can the clutch thingummybob clatter away to itself like woody woodpecker? It's awkward to disconnect the belt as I can't see if it's the main belt or a separate belt behind.
How easy is the compressor to replace and how easy is it to remove all the ac altogether to get rid of some dead weight.
I should say the ac blows lukewarm. Can a duff compressor actually generate heat into the system?

If your AC blows warm air, maybe it's lacking some refridgerant? The compressor will not start with the refridgerant level being too low.

No, I already had the thing recharged and there are no leaks so it's not that.

I just had the same ordeal...unhook the ac compressor. Their should be a little cannon plug on it. The clutch will engage and spin freely. If nothing is heard then its the compressor. I had the tapping noise and it turned into a squeaking belt. I disconnected and she runs like a champ minus the ac.

zcam94, you're a bleedin' star, guvnor. This tapping has driven me mad for 18 months now and I was convinced it was a tappet or something. Nothing worse than a gruff V8 being drowned out by a loud tapping - sounded like a Mini A series engine.
Sure enough, I yanked the AC pump relay and whammo, the noise instantly vanished. God, that sounds good. Stuff the ac.
How easy or hard is it to replace the pump?
