I have a question guys. The differential started making howling noises a couple months ago. I wanted to prepare for the worst and bought a rebuild kit for the darn thing. Well after taking everything apart I inspected the bearings only to find no damage to them or the shims. The backlash is fine, pinion depth seems fine and the gear teeth are making good contact according to this manual I got off the internet. What I did find is the yolk seems to be scratched up a bit. I may have over torqed the pinion nut when I installed my 3.73's. Can this be the sourse of the howling? My guess is that its grinding against the back of the bearings. The car seems to drive fine except for the constant howl, please help.

Johnny that could be it. How much resistance do you have spinning the pinion? It should be tight but not tight to the point it takes 2 hands. If it's that tight you will have to back it off and redo it again.
