The following is from an E-mail from Paul at thunder racing:

"Here is a package that I can
do for you. The CC306 cam is nice cam. It's going to have a choppy idle but
it's still streetable. 4.10 gears would be a must though.

Thunder Racing LT1 Cylinder Head, Camshaft & Valvetrain Package #2:
This package is engineered with upgraded springs and retainers and
non-self-aligning valvetrain parts that can handle higher lift camshafts and
high reving motors. With a Comp 306 cam, Dynojet Chassis Dyno results have
shown that this package has made 374 rear wheel horsepower @ 5800 rpm, with
341.9 ft/lbs of torque on a '96 six-speed Z28.

CNC Porting of LT1 Castings
Crane Dual Coil Valve Springs
Castings machined for larger springs
Crane Titanium Retainers & Hardened Locks
REV Stainless Valves, 2.00" intake, 1.57" exhaust
7/16" Rocker Arm Studs
Guideplates
ID locator spring seats
Fully Assembled
Exchange or Core Purchase of Cylinder Heads Required
Shorter Pushrods may be required
Your choice of camshafts from Lunati, Comp Cams or Crane
Extreme Duty Timing Set w/ oversized crank sprocket
Crane 1.6 Ratio Non-Self-Aligning Roller Rockers
Keyed Crankshaft Hub
Cam & Head Swap Gasket Packages
$2999.00

Thanks;

Paul

Seems like a pretty complete kit. The dyno results are lower than the package from GTP, but about on par. I wanted to use the mezeire water pump, but it looks like the 95 opti conversion might hold me up, and the oversized crank sprocket sounds like it will take care of the chain slop. I have another E-mail from IRS, it is very similiar, except for the cam, but without the timing set.

Well, what do ya think. Its coming down to crunch time, and I'm going to have to make a move soon, or lose my nerve.

This package looks nice but at $2999 i don't think it's not a steal as you have to pay a core charge or send in your heads and all.
You could get Lt-4 heads, Lt4 Intake and a Lt-4 Hotcam at just $1900, then add a 58mm TB and you'll be around $2300.
Add a PCM at just $160 and your looking at about 425 HP at the crank which roughly results in about 365 RWHP.
You get to keep at least $500 in your pocket that you can put towards porting of those LT4 heads and make even more mad horse power or put it towards a rear end gear change and still keep $250 in your pockets.
You also get to keep the Lt-1 heads which you could sell and this LT-4 kit will Certainly compliment your Red Z.

I think the TR package is overpriced and i'm not too sure about that 306 being so streetable as they make it sound.

The LT4 conversion does make the most sense, economically, and functionly. There are a couple of CNC'd LT4 heads out there that I want to research alittle more, and I need to find out about the lift specs of the LT4 springs, because I just dont want a Hot cam.

Should really be taking shape around September, the unpublished goal...no less than 375rwhp, and yes it will also get sprayed, so tack another 75hp onto that. 11's or tranny shop here I come.

Thunder Racing is a bit expensive, but IMHO, they are the retailer of choice.

I have bought alot of stuff from alot of different places and TR is hands down the best.

I would gladly pay a little extra and know the customer support will be top notch should any problems arise.

By the way the CC306 is a very streetable cam. It is absolutely awesome!!!

Comparing the LS4 set-up to the package you described is like comparing apples to oranges.

If you go with the TR package (or one similar) you won't be disappointed...all very good proven components.

That was my first thought. There are only a couple of online shops I buy through, and I have always gotten great results, either from questions and advice, to shipping and support after the sale. I know that the TR kit is more than buying a set of LT4 heads and intake, but #1 the ported LT1 heads will out flow and out power the stock LT4 heads, and #2 I already have LT1 heads, so why buy a second set? Theoritically I should be able to sell my old ones, but you know how that usually turns out.

I still havent decided yet, and I fill that no matter which way I go, it will be a great improvement. There are pro's and con's with each setup, but I dont want to fall into a pricing game, when it should be a "best combo" game (within reason).

Thanks for being my sounding board guys
Rob
