I should be picking up my SS on Saturday. Was just wondering if there are any free mods I can do? You know like advance the timing and such. Any suggestions? Thanx

Cut the airbox, port the maf. Relocate the IAT Sensor..... Port the Throttle Body, Grind the Throttle Body Bump Stop..................

Slow down there killer!! I am new to the F-Body I need this stuff explained. I understand everything you said at a mechanical level, but I do not know...... where to cut the air box (or why I would want to when I have ram air?), were to relocate the Intake Air Temperature Sensor to (I understand why, because I want it to be fooled into thinking the air is cooler than it really is), or why would I grind the throttle body bump stop (because if it is adjusted correctly I should have WOT when the pedal is pushed to the floor).
I know it gets old explaining the same things over and over again. What can I say. This is going to finally be the car I stick with for a long time (if you knew anything about me you would understand that statement) and I want to make sure I get every last ounce of juice out of it.
Speaking of juice, rumor has it that you can get NOS over here now!! How true is this rumor??? I may be interested in this if I can get the bottles filled locally.
Thanx for putting up with the new guy, I promise I won't stay this way for long.

Cut the Airbox = Yes, you have ram air, but there is alot of plastic between the air and the filter that needs to be removed. This can be done with a dremel.
Relocate the IAT Sensor = Yes, move it away from on top of the engine where it is on the SS. Place it towards the battery or headlight. This can be done by splicing the wire.
The Throttle bumpstop mod = Remove throttle body, attempt to open throttle to full open (Butterflies parallel) if this can not be done, dremel the stop until it can be done.
Porting the MAF = Remove the screen (See Below) Take a hacksaw and remove the metal dividers on each end of the MAF. Cut them as close to the sides as possible. When this is done use a dremel to smooth the sides out to a smooth bore appearance ** Some cars tend to respond negatively to this mod. It is recommended that you buy a pre ported set or be prepared to buy an extra set if needed. On a side note, I will trade you my ported ends for your stock ends.
Removing the MAF Screen = Document
Porting Throttle Body = If you look inside of the throttle body, you will see a ridge going up to the blades. Take this ridge off, so it is smooth all the way up to the blades, be careful to avoid getting to close to the blade as you will ruin the seal of the blade to the throttle body if you hit it.
Nitrous = Yes, you can get bottles filled here. I have heard rumors of places in Mannheim, Hockenheim and such, but I do know that there is a guy in Berlin that you mail the bottle to using the German Mail and he fills it and mails it back next day. Check the classifieds section as I have a Nitrous Setup for sale....

A couple more things
Throttle body bypass- you would have to actually show you this one.
The MAF- Remove the screen but do not cut the three wires inside if you do you will throw a code because those are what measure the air. And george is right alot of people have negative affects with cutting those wires. But removing the honey comb you won't have any problem.
Cat Punch out- pretty easy unbolt exhaust after cat take a long metal poll, and hammer the honey comb out. There are two layers of honey comb so you'll have to start your car a few times to blow all the chunks and particals out. Keep on knocking it away till it's all gone. Start the car again shut it off take a flashlight and look inside to make sure you got all of it out of the cat VERY IMPORTANT so you don't clog you exhaust. Bolt the exhaust together and there you go done deal worth a few ponys. Plus noise.

Porting of the MAF = try somebody elses ported MAF before you commit to it to your car. I did everything: Honeycomb/excess plastic/hand rubbed the inside to a mirror. Didnt slow my car down, but made it rich as it could be.
TB-bypass - spend the 5-10 bucks and get the kit from BMR. You could easily enough find the caps laying around, but this way is much easier.
IAT relocate - dynoed to be a flop, but your car may be differant. BTW the IAT takes up prime property if you are installing N20.
Since its a 96 and gutting the cats will throw codes, you might as well ditch the A.I.R pump/lines. Do the EGR block off, and you may save yourself some intake oil leaks, that is if it doesnt already have them. Go ahead and start saving for 94-95 headers.
Send your $15 off to the GM dealer of your choice and get a LT4 KM and a 160 thermostat
Go synthetic everywhere. The SS's came with mobil 1, but it cost a arm/leg in Europe, so I doubt its still in there. Try to swindel some Redline for the diff, and tranny, or Honda tranny fluid (dont laugh, its the best)
While your at it order a crank under-drive pulley and a K&N panel (the SS needs help in the induction side)
This will set you back under $200, and be very noticable
G-luck, its all up hill from there

Dang with that list I will be busy for a while. Just for the record, I plan on moving to Pheonix, AZ and need the car to pass emissions. So stuff like gutting the cats is a big no, no for me.
Gutting the airbox shouldn't be a problem. I have a dremel tool and have done the same thing on every other car I owned.
As for moving the IAT Sensor I will have to see were it is located. I would think that fresh outside air being sucked in by the scoop would be colder than under hood temperatures of the engine compartment, just my opinion.
I will check out the throttle body bump stop.
I will definetly remove the screen from the MAF, done that on other cars also. But I don't think I will gut the MAF. Probably just buy a bigger one later on down the road.
Throttle body by-pass I understand this one. You disconnect the coolant lines going to the throttle body and connect them together. This mod has been proven to do nothing for performance on other cars.
Colder thermostat I will do that. I have been reading on how to make the fans come on at lower temperatures. I may just wire a switch in so I can run them to cool the car down when I am at the track.
Mobile 1 is a most have. I always ran it in my last car and I plan on running it in the SS. I have already been planning on changing all of the fluids.

There's a meet/modfest this Sat the 17th. Conflicting reports as to where. So I'll be clearing that up a little bit later. For now though.......K-town Pulaski Auto skills shop @ 10am.

Just a little to soon for me. I will actually be in Mainz Kastel picking my car up that day. Maybe the next one, weather permiting of course. It is very cold this morning. Snow probobly isn't far away. Peace

Let me know when you want to do them... I have them all done on my car (except the bump stop.. I just bought a new T.B.)... Let me know... my car goes into storage on Sunday after I whoop that red neck with the mustang!

Even with a new throttle body, you should check if it needs cleaning up and if the throttle bump stop needs work..
