Well I have been doing a little research on this and there are 2 sides to this mod.
Side one = They have done the mod and say it leans the A/F ratio out and claim to notice the difference right away. They say there are no side effects and everyone should do it.
Side two = They say do not do it! The MAF is a precision instrument and if you do anything to disrupt the uniformity of the air flow across the full face of the meter (which includes removing the screen), you destroy the calibration and repeatability of the measurements it takes. This makes it almost impossible to tune the car. They also claim the Grantelli MAF is a POS and isn't much better then porting the stock MAF. They say to save your $300 and buy a copy of LT1_Edit and adjust your power enrichment tables to target a leaner A/F ratio. This is a safe and repeatable method to lean the car out.
Side one = majority are people running 12-13's in the 1/4 mile. With average bolt ons and probably no prior mechanical training.
Side two = majority are people running 10-11's in the 1/4 mile and have extensive work done to their cars. Obviously have spent a lot of time and money trying to get everything they can out of their cars. This would lead me to believe they have spent a lot of hours at the track and trying different things on their cars. so they should know what works and what doesn't.
I'm not going to say who I would side with in an disbute about porting the MAF sensor, but I think you could guess.
Anyone know anything about this "LT1_Edit" program? Hook me up. I knew I shouldn't have sold my A/F gauge with the Honda. Peace

You have just found the right answer, research!!! The world is full of A$$holes like me trying to make up your mind, and have found the real deal.
I'm trying to fall into the second set of people, but my problem is a 11 sec car with a 14 sec driver.
Good luck on the Edit, I cant help you there cuz it doesnt work on a OBD I car that I'm aware of.
G'luck, and dont let people tell you otherwise, you can run with the L** powered cars. You just have to drive it like your not afraid to replace parts !!!!

dont know if anyones seen this, but here is some comments from Ed Wright on ported MAFS, and the GMS MAF
Good morning, Mike is dead nuts here (whoda thunk it? ) The MOST I have seen tuning a car both ways, completely stock MAF (screen and all) versus the big plastic 85mm unit with the screen out, on a 450 rwhp LS1 is 4.5 rwhp. On my own box stock 115,000 mile '96 TA dyno mule, it was 2 rwhp. Did get a tick over 6 rwhp on a 740 rwhp turbo LS1, with plenty of work to find even that. MAF "porting" is simply butchery for no reason. The loss of the air straightener is worse than the small gain in air flow. I have had engineers talk about the pressure drop across the MAF. I use the dumb Okie approach, if it does not end up at the wheels, so what? If the kids that think they need a bigger one (MAF) I try to get them to use the 85mm plastic truck/LS6 unit so we have something known to work with. Hard to long distance tune for something not repeatable, like a hand cut one, or the Granatelli MAF of which there never seems to be any two calibrated alike. I think Mike explained that they sand blasted a resistor inside to alter it's value, (to "calibrate" it) which appears to not terribly repeatable. Could also explain the high failure rate. I would assume (I'm no engineer, I can barely spell it) that operation would make that resistor less likely to live a long life.
Lyndon, in open loop the PCM uses the open loop temp vs load air/fuel ratio table. That is the place I clean up the rich cold start fueling with cams, etc.
The only cars I have seen that did not clean up, or respond to tuning the V.E. tables were cars with hacked up MAFs, and the MAF tables scaled up too far, getting things out of balance. You can't get one side (MAF) too far out of whack, and expect to correct it with the VE tables. I have not found scaling the whole MAF table a given percent to be an effective fix for that anyway. I drive them on the dyno with variable loads and rpm, and scale the MAF table in areas. The changes required from hacking them, or putting larger aftermarket ends on does not appear to be linear. It takes larger changes in the lower ranges than upper rpms. I have not found simply re scaling the complete table 10% or whatever to work well at all. Guys get frustrated trying to do it that way and when they can't get the trims to come in with the VE tables they end up changing the injector constant to try and patch it. You have to keep both sides (MAF & SD) in balance. I recently did a project (that was a waste of time in the end) for a very good, long time customer. He ported/butchered a plastic 85mm MAF for his 396" LT1. He thought he just had to have a big one (MAF) and sent me the MAF before bringing the car to me. I put it on my '96 TA, and worked on the dyno with the MAF table to get the fuel trims back to zero. With the MAF as the only thing changed, I could tell exactly how far to go, so I could keep everything in balance. When he brought the car up from Orlando, comparing his old mail order tune up with an LT1 MAF to the end result after several pulls trying to find all I could with his hacked up 85mm MAF, we found a grand total of 4 rwhp. He butchered a perfectly good MAF, hauled his car on a trailer for four days, and paid me for my time for four hp. That's dedication. Or, possible insanity. Racing cars'll do that to ya.
I had better get my butt to work.
I hope you guys/gals all have a great Holiday.
Take care, Ed

Rob you sure can find some stuff. So pretty much Ed is saying the same thing we've been saying PORTING YOUR MAF IS not the most COST!!!!! effective move you can make. I new this is what the right answer was this is why I never ported mine. I'm not going to lie I almost did when everyone one else was, but one of my budddys had to purchase a new one after he jacked his up I decided not to. Rob definatly good info I guess if you don't listen to a pro like Ed then you deserve to spend $300.00.

D*mn Rob, were was this info a few days ago? I almost ported my MAF and you just held back because you knew you were right. That's pretty sad I'm not a newbie to car's in general, but I would like some honest help. Don't just back off because I challenge your answer! Let me know where to look for the true answer. Trust me I have been in this car shat for a long time and I will look around even if you tell me what I want to hear the first time. Anyway, good discussion on this subject! Peace

???????Whaaa...?
I think I made it very clear that I dont endorse porting the MAF, and said how my car didnt like it. I've also wrote about this before when I was getting my PCM reprogramed in a much earlier post. (shameless plug for the search feature)
I would bet I go to as many if not more message boards and other sites than the average joe. When I find something that may be interesting to the group I post it. The same day I found Ed's letter, I posted it.
Krazy, I'm alot of things, but someone who holds back is not one of them. I'm more of the humble type .

Glad to hear that, I am the same way. I don't go around saying I know everything, but if someone ask about something I have researched or experianced I will tell them what I have learned.
Merry X-Mas and happy new year to everyone!!
