 Post subject: Why do people buy V6's?

I'm not knocking V6's because I've never driven one but in the UK at least, the insurance is no different, the fuel consumption can't be that different given the weight of the car, the second-hand prices of the V6's don't appear to be any cheaper and yet there appear to be a lot of V6's out there. What were the reasons that people bought a V6 over a V8? In retrospect, would they have bought the V8 or stuck by the V6. What are the V6's like?

Before I bought my Z28 I tested a V6.
The V6 car is no way as good as the V8. I am not meaning performance I am talking about handling and it appeared build quality was not as good.
I may have tested a Monday morning car!!!

I drove a ´97 V6 once and it wasn´t all that bad, it had flows and K&N´s.... I think the main reason why people drive V6 in germany is the insurance, as far as in know V8´s cost much more insurance than 6 bangers.... I could be wrong though...

I got snookered into buying a V6 as i was lacking the $4000 difference on a new car. Bought mine new and paid cash so i simply couldn't afford the Z.
Testdrove Only the V6 (BIG MISTAKE !) and it impressed me, but any car would as it was the very first car i was gonna own and didn't even have a license.

After owning the car and about 600 miles i realised that it was pretty sporty but the car wasn't performing like a musle car should.
Then in 1998 i test drove Roy's 98SS and that's when i realised that somebody had stolen 2 cilinders from my car :(
On top of that my car had not a single option short of T-tops, body side moldings and the alloy rims so in the end i spend a fortune to get some luxury and power items.

It came to a point where the cilinder envy got the best of me and i took a loan to afford buying an used engine + 6 speed to convert my baby.

In the end should have take a loan for the extra grands and buy a fully loaded Z in the first place !!!!!!

Positive side, I learned a great deal about this car and i'm pretty sure that when it comes to the v6 i'm one of the very few on this continent that really knows the V6 from A to Z.
I had a lot of fun, respect and a lot of safe miles with this car that NEVER let me down (except for a crappy DELCO battery). So I guess it was meant to be.

I often thought about getting a V8 (160hp work, but 288hp...),
but because of tax (more displacement, much more tax :( ),
insurance and mainly because of the higher fuel consumption (let´s talk about german fuel prices...) i still own my sixbanger. In addition i´m still student and quite happy to earn enough money to drive a car like this!

And with a moded (TÜV: :-nono: ) V6 you can have a lot of fun, too :)

@Sergio: My DELCO battery died also - has been replaced with a 100Ah Varta truck battery in the trunk :)

I hvae no clue ad to why some one would want a V-6 instead of the Z. I remember when I bought my car... my wife made the mistake of wanting me to get a V-6 so we took a test drive in both.... she changed her mind anout 3 seconds into the Z's test drive! But I do know a few people with V-6's and they say it is mostly due to insurance costs.

I think people just want the looks, but not the additional costs associated with the higher displacement!!

Dunno if it is different in the states, but most people here start with a 4 banger (i had only 3 cylinders in my first car!) so a V6 is a way up step. According to my info there are only bout 150 Z28 sold per year in Germany, opposed to some 1000 v6. Main pointer is that the convertible is v6 only in Germany.

Also people are horrified that a V8 eats like 20l gas per 100/km. (Well mine takes 25l at full throttle, but we are talking averages here)

My little Honda Prelude 2.0 drank between 10 - 13l (Max consumption 15l) compared to the V8 14 - 18 it´s way too much. After all we are talking 136 hp to 305 hp !!!

I had a AMG modded Mercedes 190e 2.3 16v with estimated 190 hp. The damn thing took up to 25 liters on forced driving.

My first test drive was a 99 pewter V6, only nobody told me it was and i was mighty surprised when i opened the hood and read 3800 series II. I BELIEVED it WAS a V8 !!! Thta´s why germans are normally satisfied with the V6, 193hp is a lot for german cars.

Anyway, i´d never take less than 8 little bangers anymore.
