I was watching the race at Houstan yesterday when I saw it. Gary Scelzi drives it, and it hasnt made a full pass yet! Severe problems with tuning

I've no idea what its running, but whatever it is, I dont think I like it. Toyota is getting back in racing, F1 (solidly a back marker) NHRA (havent made it a 1/4 yet) and there is rumbles that they want in NASCAR (just plain wrong)

No matter how you cook it, rice is still rice.

yeah but rice does sometimes tastes damn good if you put the right sauce on!
As much as I do like US horses (on legs or wheels) I've been driving Corolla (the 2nd now) since 85 back and forward to work, he I got to pay the german gas price (about $4 a gallon) and tax (per cubic) and I am driving about 30 000 miles a year. Get good gas milage, do not invest money or work except tires, brakes, exhaust and window wipers. Once as it was new I had it serviced in a shop, they forgot to screw the valve cover back on, lost all the oil and still drove at nighttime 200 km home on the autobahn, not a good sample I know but I thought the light was just broke since I picked it up from the shop the day before. Was surprised myself, it didn't hurt it. Put another 150 000 miles without maintenance on the same engine... and so on. And as you could see it was good for dragracing (just go and race and win and go home without even opening the hood once that week).
If you ever look for a good second car: get a Toyota.

The thing I dont like, is that they should stay in they're lane.

I would never go hot lap with a WRX, but to say some I4 or V6 can go toe to toe with me (all hail the GNX) is just plain dumb.

Sure, a s2000 can probably beat me in the auto x, but put a bolt on s2000 against me in the 1/4 and I will down right embarrass him.

A toyota in NHRA is a slap in the face to me. Please, oh please let a celica try to stage against me in a heads up race. There will be atleast 4 secs between him and me. Thats the thing that kills me about the punks with the 3 tier wings and blue lights running around here, they actually think that they have a shot at beating me!!!! You know what? They usually do, cuz I dont waste the gas. I've found myself driving slow to prove I can, and they are trying to drive fast to prove they can. I'm gonna dyno this next weekend ( I promise John, Jeff, Ryan) and I know that I will be closer to 400RWHP than to 300RWHP, imagine some idiot in a Integra reving next to you thinking I can take this car because I make over 1hp per litre!!!! who cares, you only have 1.8ltr's. Leave the imports to the twisties, V8's own the 1/4 mile.

don't get me wrong: There is fast racing horses and dependable working horses... a smart farmer got one of
each. That is what I tried to tell.
Right is, that you shouldn't try to breed a racing horse out of a working horse... ;)

The truth is the V8s use to own the 1/4 mile. And still would/do, but the new generation isn't into American V8s they are into imports and that is why the NHRA is supporting events like the "NHRA Import Nationals". That is were the new money is at. So like any smart buisness they(NHRA) are going to follow new trends. Maybe I am a bad example to speak on this or maybe I am the right person to bec=ause I love American V8s and I also Love imports. I am not biased toward one brand or country. I have owned several of each(American V8 / import) and they each have their highs. There is nothing like the torque and sound of an American V8! There is nothing like the handling of an import that is set up right. There is also nothing like the look on an American V8 drivers face when you spank his *ss in your modded import. People just don't look at you like that if you beat them in your Camaro because they expect you to beat them.

So yes your Bolt on American V8 will cream most bolt on imports, but you need to understand that the American V8 is fading. The times that the imports are running are very, very impressive and I am sure it is just a matter of time before you find yourself asking how did that (insert import car here) beat me in the 1/4.

P.S. IMOP - a modded import car is much easier and funner to drive every day than my Camaro. I love my Camaro and want to keep it, I just don't want to have to drive it everyday to work.

This responce wasn't meant to ruffle anyones feathers, just to open your eyes to what the future has in store for you. Peace

You are exactly right, Krazy.. People want to make money, and if that means accepting ricemobiles as race cars, oh well. :)

It hadn't occurred to me, Krazy, but you're right. If it came down to a showdown between an American V8 and just about anything else, I would just assume the American car would win. Of course, I'm biased! Seriously, though, interest in American sports cars is dwindling because some great names are coming off the market this year. Couple that with hit movies like The Fast and the Furious (aka Uncle Ben's Wet Dream), which depicts the new era of imports and street racing, and there's a rice explosion now. We're moving into new territory, and why should the NHRA stay in the past? They're out to get sponsors and make money, and this is how.

Please let us know what you hit on the dyno! I will be very curious as to what you are pulling. My car is in the shop AGAIN(new opti and plug wires) and I should get it back this weekend. As soon as I do I am going straight to the dyno shop. We have a similar set up so it will be interesting. Take care man, Mike

and it (the V8) would resoundingly skull drag any of the supposed to be "hot hatches"

Read the sport compact, or whatever they are calling they're rags this month, and they list 4 paragraphs of stereo mods, the 12" diffuser and a K&N. No times, no dyno, nadda zip.

The majority of imports idea of tuning is to develop the bark, and forget the bite. American tuning is 180deg differant.

I dont blame them for it, because look at what they have to start with. A limp wristed engine that makes about 30ftlbs of torque at idle, and you have to wrap it up to 9 grand to get the 175hp (or whatever) they are claiming, in a powerband of about 500-1000rpm window. If that was what I had to work with, I would say screw the power mods also.

If it doesnt say supra on it I dont have alot of respect (excepting of course the unusals ie. NSX, skyline...), and even in the Supra camp, dynos are one thing, results are sometimes very differant.

...getting back to the original idea of the post, it was embarrasing to watch that poor car get smoked all the way out of the race. It never even made a full pass (or half pass for that matter), cuz the tuning was non-existant. I think they should stay in auto x, and out of the NHRA. Maybe the rice nationals by NOPI or something, but not the NHRA you remember the National (USA) Hot Rod Association.

Man I got worked up!!!!!!!! :)
