Well thanks to Ryan, John, and Tony (working till the wee hours of the AM) I can now enjoy my new 3.73 rear end which is great becuase by the looks of my stock bearings I only had a short ammount of time before I had some SERIOUS problems!! Although there is still quite a bit of gear whine.... it has decreased slightly...... Bruce how long was it before your whine went away... this stuff drives me NUTS!!!! Never the less... I still haven't seen how much performance extra it has given me I am still trying to break them in before I try to blow them up! Well I just wanted to say thanks again to John, Tony and Ryan for all of their help.. these guys know their shat... but I don't think Ryan ever wants to do another diff ever again! Well that's it for now!! Later!

You may have to reshim it. Give it 500 miles to break in.

Hey just remember to retighten to TA allen bolts too. Then tend to walk out after initial install and give you a slight leak. Hopefully reshimming won't be necessary and put some more lube in there if you haven't done so already!
And thankyou for the help too! You didn't see a bolt fly out from under my car last night did you?

John.... nope no blots hit my car atleast!LOL! Hey but atleast you found your wallet!
Wow it takes me forever to hit 500mi.... well I guess not after the Nuremburg trip next weekend.... I still have not gotten around to adding more fluid yet But I'm going to before I drive it next.
Bruce, What valve spring trick? If your talking about the plug wire you can ask John that thing looks like a Frankenstien fix! I have about 4 layr=ers of insulation on it and like I said if it burns through this time I'm just going to kill my cr take the insurance $$ and get a 2002!!!

You may want to drain it and refill at 1000 miles if it gets queiter you should be good.

You should have no whine if they were installed correctly, or you got a bogus set of gears or you bought some racing set. When I first picked mine up after the gear install I had no whine, and I still dont to this day with about 30k on them.
What brand did you get?

Well I'm pretty sure they were installed correctly... I'm within my backlash settings... and it was shimmed correctly.... I heard that whine was pretty common...
I bought a set of MOTIVE 3.73 gears....and since I added a little more fluid it has gotten quieter.... I mostly only hear it when there is no load or the car is slowing down.... but then again my exhaust is quite loud...

No loose bolts as of yet and I topped her off which quieted it down some..... hey could you find out the name of that quieting fluid you were telling me about.......

Jeffs onto something about the whine. My gears were reshimed 4 differant times, and now there is alittle whine on the accel side (light throttle) but coast and decell are spot on, zero whine.
Your dealing with .001 of a inch, and the some gears have a differant cut than others which needs to be taken in account.

So do you think they need to be reshimmed?

Hawk we reset the entire exhaust and that pretty much cured the problem. I can't even find the valve spring you gave me. ARGH!!! It only bangs when I take of incorrectly in 1st. The little spring in there now is fine for the moment and I'll change it out if it decides to bail out. I'm hoping after a good 2wks of driving it'll settle on its own and then I won't need the spring. We'll see.
I had a lot of backfiring on the way to the gas station from Tony's and it was from old gas mixed in w/ Chemtool and octane booster. Cleared up on the way home and ran like a champ until I decided to get on it playing w/ Scott on A6 and blew your "So called magic gump" along w/ my air fitting bolt! Almost put a hole in my hood! So I'm careless until I can find the correct bolt or take it to the shop and weld a cap on there. Which will happen very shortly after it dries up. I'm still running rich 110 blm's to be exact but she runs w/ no codes w/ a -40 oil temp reading per the snap on scanner! I'll be tinkering w/ it all wk til Fri.
Hey who wants to help w/ install my intank fuel pump? Since I almost ran out of gas that night it definetly did something to the pump. With the key on but not started the pump whines several times. Still starts on 1st crank though but I know it's going south. So I need another set of hands one day in the near future. For now though I'm going to install my inline and I'll be ok.
Scott I'm glad to hear the gears are getting quieter hopefully she'll shut the *(&%! up! Shimming is a beyotch as we can attest to.

How many miles on the gears do you have? I also have Motives, but in the 4.10 flavor. If you dont re-shim them soon, I am pretty sure it will be too late. You should have zero wine, if they are installed correctly.
Like Rob said, he has no whine but they had to re-shim them to get them correct, you have to get that done before they get broke in. The clearance is so close on them, they have to be right on the nose.
P.S Rob I think I sold another on the 4.10's. Roy liked them.

Well I guess it'll be back to the shop. That sucks. Everyone w/ these gears damn. Feel like the Last Moheccan or something. Guess I'll just have to hunt you all down after everyone gets the jump out the line.
