In the current issue of MM&FF the cover story is the last Mustang vs. Fbody shootout ever to be had. A Heritage SS vs. '03 Cobra.
13.25@106.42mph vs. 12.79@106.39.
Best runs for either car with Evan Smith driving previously
12.89@109mph vs 12.67@110.11mph so obviously the conditions were less than optimal, but same driver, same track tells which car is quicker.
Road course results the SS and Cobra are split buy only .32 on a 1.35mile course Cobra again.
Dyno 381 rwhp 374 lbs-ft 305.5rwhp 334.7lbs-ft
without air silencer
394rwhp 375lbs-ft vs. 316.7rwhp 340.9lbs-ft
John Coletti (Ford bigwig) said the NVH standards required that they choke off the exhaust and air intake to meet the federal requirements. That is pretty obvious when you see that the air silencer was worth 13hp. They figure another 15-20hp in exhaust, so 400+rwhp at the wheels with just a catback. I cant wait to see what happens when they swap the blower pulley and push it up to 12psi. 430-450rwhp??

Darn, I thought it would be worse butt-kicking than than that, I am not so scared of them now. Only mid 12's? I was thinking low 12's.

The SS never got into the 12's. They showed the picture of a flag blowing straight out, there was a 20mph head wind. With 110mph+ traps, it should be a low 12 sec car.

Just think a chip burned and a little bit of exhaust work and who knows what you will get.

You could put a 5.4 in there also.

I see that in Car Craft there's news of not only the 390hp Cobra but a slightly lesser 340hp Mach 1 complete with copy original Mach1 badges. How come GM dump the Camaro due to falling sales and then Ford release two at once. Something not right about the logic of that development unless Ford plan on picking up all the ex F-body buyers in one fell swoop before that GTO comes ambling along.

and dont forget the return of the BOSS next year. By my count that is 4 cars that are stellar
1. Cobra
2. Mach 1
3. GT40
4. The return of the Boss
Lets not forget the Bullit and the Lightning. As a fence rider, I'm unbiased, but something looks alittle lop sided in the GM vs. Ford war.

I think GM should bring back the Chevelle, Nova and Tempest.

I'm with ya Hawk I would like to see that too. My first car was a Nova, and it would be nice to have one again. Just seems they like to bring back the name. Nova came back for awhile as a 4cyl, then there is the reincarnation of the monte carlo, and the current Impalla.
I only hope the GTO comes back with more than a name.

There is a blip in the newest Motor Trend about the new GTO. It is approved, they are going with Holden(sp?) from Australia. I'm sure you guys have read about them before. The GTO will have a LS1 in it and will be rear wheel drive. It actually looks pretty functional for families. Probably won't be any record setter at the track, but it should run pretty quick.

Hey Jeff, concerning the slower et in MM&FF.
I didnt know the geriatrics at Hot Rod could still drive, but they got a '03 to trap 114mph and change.
Low 12's are gonna be cake with that much muscle out the back door.

I heard that the 114MPH was with a smaller pulley. Go to cz28.com and there is a kill story. I guess a long tube, bolt on LT1 stuck with in a car off a roll. Before you call BS. Its on video!

I have been reading both sides of the story. The cobra driver posts on Stangnet. There is alittle more to the story than either side is saying.
