The GC-QX5HD is the newest, state-of-the-art, digital still camera from JVC. The 3.34 Mega Pixel CCD allows for high quality pictures at resolutions up to 2032 X 1536. The Manufacturer's suggested retail price is $1299.95
1080i HDTV Compatible Output, the GC-QX5HD can output a 1080 scanning line interlaced image- the same signal used by HDTV. Get ready for the "new rules" of television, with a high definition image and output that are ready for the task.
Pro-Still Technology offers several modes that improve picture even further when photographing stationary subjects.
The 6 Mega Pro-Still mode uses advanced pixel shifting to create an even higher resolution image equivalent to over 6 mega pixels. NR Pro-Still can be used to dramatically reduce picture noise by up to 9db.
The GC-QX5HD comes with a Film Copy Attachment that lets you shoot your old film negatives in 6Mega Pro-Still mode and make digital stills from them. This convenient feature makes digitizing your films quick and easy.
DR Pro-Still allows digital stills that approach the same wide latitude of conventional film by creating separate exposures for highlight & shadow areas. Then these separate exposures are combined. This, in effect, triples the cameras dynamic range.
The GC-QX5HD offers maximum creativity & convenience with collage modes, video e-mail capability, auto flash and a 200,000 pixel 2" TFT View Screen..
This JVC digital still camera is easy to connect via USB terminal, and both Windows & Apple drivers are provided. A special high speed connection is also offered for the matching JVC GV-SP2 printer.
Easy to use
The JVC GC-QX5HDu looks and feels much like a standard point-and-shoot film camera. The camera measures 4-3/8 inches by 2-11/16 inches by 2-3/8 inches and weighs 10 ounces with the battery. On the back, the camera has a large two-inch polysilicon TFT display that is a little dim but still quite legible. Included in the package are a lithium ion battery and a charger/AC adapter, so you can still use the camera while the battery is recharging. The battery is sufficient for around 50 pictures, which is good for a digital camera.
The JVC GC-QX5HDu is easy to use for basic photographs with the zoom conveniently located under your thumb. The mode selector is slightly recessed, so some may find it difficult to access. It's easy to forget about, which is a problem as many of the advanced features and playback options are reached via the mode selector. The power dial includes a lock button to deter accidental activation, but pressing the lock button and turning the dial simultaneously takes some getting used to. Changing settings is easy, with all the options showing up on a single menu. A directional button allows you to easily scroll through the menu and make the desired adjustments.
The camera includes an automatic shutoff when not in use. It's not a true sleep mode, since you'll have to turn the dial to off then back on to resume use. Though a great battery-saving idea, the camera should wake up when any buttons are pressed.
Four ports on one side of the camera allow you to output images to a TV or HDTV (1080i), an optional printer, or a computer. A DC input is also included in the port array. JVC includes a cover to protect the ports, but it isn't permanently attached to the camera and can be easily lost.
The camera has a 2.3x optical zoom lens (7.5 to 17.5mm; 35mm equivalent: 37 to 86mm). A 1/1.8th inch 3.34 megapixel CCD (3.24 megapixel effective) captures data and writes to a 16MB SmartMedia card. The camera has three standard resolutions of 2032x1536, 1024x768, and 640x480 plus three levels of JPEG compression. With maximum resolution and fine compression, you can take 16 pictures. At the lowest resolution and standard compression you'll capture 174 images. The camera also includes an uncompressed mode, storing images in TIF format, but you only get one picture at maximum resolution.
The camera's focus, metering, flash, shutter, and aperture can all be controlled manually. The camera also features some creative alternatives in Manual mode. Like many other cameras in its class, the JVC includes a Video mode capable of shooting 20 seconds of video with sound. JVC chose to use a proprietary format called JMM (160x120), so you'll need the player to view your videos. File sizes are small at around 300 KB, but the proprietary decoder makes it difficult to share clips and there's no way to convert them to standard formats. The player emulates the LCD on the camera and you can't view them full screen. For using a proprietary standard, JVC loses significant marks.
In manual mode, the camera provides 5 different settings. Three Pro-Still options (Noise Reduction, Pixel Shift, and Wide Range) improve the quality of stills by combining multiple images. Only Noise Reduction showed any noticeable difference and much of the true color was lost in the image. Collage Mode combines two separate images and Film Mode allows you to digitize pictures from your existing negatives. The JVC GC-QX5HDu includes an attachment that will hold your negatives and allow you to easily take pictures of them.
Image quality
Images are downloaded to a PC or Mac via USB. When taking scenic pictures outdoors we found pictures to be crisp with no artifacting; however images were darker than the true conditions. In macro mode images were crisp, but obvious noise was visible in the colors. Using the macro mode indoors, we found that images in the background were blurry and the images were darker than other cameras of similar quality. Compared to the Canon G1 and the Nikon 880, the JVC QX5HDu falls short.
The JVC GC-QX5HDu isn't as fast as the Canon G1, but it was quick compared to the Panasonic iPalm. In uncompressed mode, images can take over 30 seconds to process. In high-resolution JPEG format, the JVC processes images in around five seconds. It's not blazing fast, but within the acceptable range. With 'M. Drive' enabled, the camera will shoot three continuous images and you'll have to wait around 10 seconds for them to be stored.
